The gypsy and cowboy wedding that could very well have been in Aristébano

It's a pity, the Valdesan organizers must think, that Sara Verdasco and Juan Carmona did not decide on the beautiful braña of Aristébano – on the border of the municipalities of Valdés and Tineo – to celebrate their wedding. Due to lack of requirements it has not been. Well, the bride is a descendant of vaqueiros, specifically Cándida and Antonio, a couple originally from the Valdesan braña of Pena who emigrated to Madrid at the end of the 19th century.

It was precisely the capital of Spain that was chosen to celebrate the wedding and not the Aristébano meadows, where every year at the end of July the popular cowboy rite wedding takes place, within the Vaqueiro Festival and the Vaqueirada. For this edition, however, the square is already filled: Sandra Rubio and Claudio Riesgo, both with cowboy roots, will get married on July 31 through the rite of their ancestors.

If Sara Verdasco had decided to choose Asturias to celebrate her wedding, Aristébano would have seen a more than eye-catching parade of celebrities. The first, the couple formed by the bride's brother, the tennis player Fernando Verdasco, and his partner, Ana Boyer, daughter of the well-known Isabel Preysler and the late Miguel Boyer. One thing to keep in mind: if the relationship between the two young people comes to fruition, Preysler will get a cowboy son-in-law.

In the Madrid wedding – which, as usual, already has the label of “wedding of the year” -, the vaqueiros have had to face another people no less proud of their customs and history: the gypsies. And the groom is a member of the Carmonas, quite a name in the world of music and flamenco. His uncle and his father are members of the “Ketama” group.

On this part there were no shortage of illustrious guests either, such as the Flores family, Simoneta Gómez-Acebo, Rafael Amargo, Elsa Anka, Dafne Fernández, Bibiana Fernández…

“When the Carmonas and the Flores get together, things break out,” Elena Furiase, Lolita's daughter, warned upon arriving. “And now there are the Verdascos.” Cowboy temple for gypsy fury.
