The fate of people who lived under extremely rare living conditions

A man who, despite his third leg, learned to play football; twins who never spoke to anyone except each other; a man in whose head lived 24 personalities. These people are personifications of the word “unbelievable”, no doubt. But their stories are, yes, quite real, and have been impressing several generations around the world.

O incredible.club believes that our world is full of mysteries and amazing people, and today I would like to tell you more about the fate of the most unusual people.

The “Canary Wolf Man”, Petrus Gonsalvus (Pedro González)

The vast majority of us know the famous love story Beauty and the Beast🇧🇷 But few know that the heroes of this tale had real origins. It all started when, in 1537, on the Spanish island of Tenerife, a strange baby was born, whose body was completely covered with hair.

His parents thought that their son had a demonic disease (at that time, nobody knew about hypertrichosis), and when little Pedro turned 10, he was sold to pirates. They christened him the “Wolf Man”, and gave him as a gift to Henry II, the King of France.

Henry II noted that the rare child was very intelligent and quickly learned the French language. The king then devoted himself to giving him a good education. According to some sources, when Henry died, his wife, the queen consort Catherine de Medici, was the supporter of Pedro’s marriage. He married the Queen’s lady-in-waiting, the beautiful Catherine Raffelin.

Even though the couple seemed distinctly different from most noble families, they never gave reason to doubt the strength of their marriage. They had 6 children, 4 of whom inherited their father’s quirk. The most famous descendants of Peter and Catherine were the girls Madeleine and Antonietta.

But after the death of Catherine de Medici, the family fell out of favor with the Court of France and could no longer stay in the castle. Therefore, Pedro took his family to Italy, where they lived for some time under the protection of Margaret of Parma.

After a while, the family distanced itself from the noble life and settled in the province of Viterbo, where Pedro died at the age of 81 (according to the standards of the time, it can be said that he was a real long-lived).

Pedro’s story not only inspired the writing of the fairy tale about the Beast, which managed to win Beauty’s heart, but also encouraged scientists to study his pathology, the aforementioned hypertrichosis.

Frank Lentini, the 3 legged man

Frank had 11 brothers and sisters, but they were all normal. His parents abandoned the special boy by handing him over to his aunt, who, in turn, handed him over to a shelter for disabled children.

He said that, until that moment, he felt like the most unhappy boy in the world. But when, in the same shelter, he came across children who couldn’t hear or speak, or who had some kind of mental retardation, he realized that, even if their condition was serious, it wasn’t that terrible, because despite everything, they still could enjoy all the sensations of this world.

So the child decided to make peace with his own body. She learned to ride a bike and play soccer. At the age of 8, he went to the United States, where he grew up and became a circus actor.

The performances of the 3-legged young man reached unprecedented popularity, so much so that Frank decided to take the opportunity to help people reconcile with their problems. He published an autobiographical book that he sold at his shows.

In the book, he wrote about the peculiarities of life with his anomaly. For example, she told how the mission to buy shoes was.

“I buy 2 pairs and give the remaining shoe as a gift to a friend who lost a leg in a tragic accident”, wrote the author.

In addition to all this, Lentini also tried to understand what could have caused her malformation while still in her mother’s womb, and advised some women on precautions during pregnancy, in order to avoid problems like this.

At age 30, the 3-legged man received US citizenship and married a woman named Theresa Murray. The couple had 4 healthy children. Frank died aged 77. He continued performing shows until the end of his life.

The Incredibly Smart Child, Christian Heinrich Heineken

The child they called the miracle boy was born in 1721 in Lübeck, Germany. His father was the painter and architect Paul Heineken, and his mother was the artist and alchemist Catharina Elisabeth Heinecken. The baby started talking at 10 months, repeating the names of objects, and sometimes complete sentences spoken by adults.

The child had a phenomenal memory. According to witnesses, within a year he already knew the Torah (the equivalent of the Bible for Jews) by heart and was quoting the New Testament in Latin. At the age of 3, the child gave a lecture on the History of Denmark to the then king of that country, Frederick IV. His lecture was so detailed that the courtiers were fascinated by the little genius.

Sadly, Christian lived only 4 years, as he was celiac (gluten intolerant), a disease that was not known at the time, and his parents probably fed him foods that made him sick.

The giant couple, Martin and Anna Bates

Do you believe that a girl over 2.3 meters, in the 19th century, would easily find a spouse who didn’t consider her too tall? Probably not, but Anna Bates, born in 1846 in Canada, did it.

Anna with her parents.

The girl was born into an ordinary family: her parents, like her brothers and sisters, were of average height. But already at the age of 15, Anna had already grown a lot, standing at 2.1 meters. So, she weighed around 100 kg, and her shoe size was approximately 50 cm. It should be noted that, despite her impressive proportions, she was a very sweet and delicate lady.

When she reached the age of 25, she fell in love with a traveling circus performer, Martin Van Buren Bates, who had also been born into a family where the members were of average height, but who, from the age of 6, had begun to grow quickly, and at 14 he already measured 2.1 meters.

When Martin met Anna, her height reached 2.32 meters, and the girl, according to the statements of contemporaries, was even taller.

The two ended up getting married. Both were creative people and the others not only remembered their heights, but also their acting skills, as well as their musical skills.

The couple tried to have children twice. On May 19, 1872, Anna gave birth to a daughter, who weighed over 8 kg and died at birth. After 7 years, the Bates family had a son who was born weighing 10 kg. He lived only 11 hours, even though, according to the father of the family, he was perfect in every way.

Anna died 9 years after these sad events, the victim of a heart attack, and Martin remarried. This time, his chosen one was a woman of average height.

The man of 24 personalities

William Milligan suffered from a rare mental disorder that caused 24 autonomous personalities to coexist in his head, who almost never took responsibility for each other’s actions. William could only control the personality that belonged to himself (which was even called Billy), but he could never control the others.

Some of Billy’s personalities were strong, they knew about the existence of others and could even dominate them. Others were fragile and didn’t control anything. There were sympathetic personalities, who helped patients to perform tasks and face problems; and other unwanted ones, which got in the way due to his bad behavior and put him in complicated situations.

In his head lived men, women, adults and children, people with different levels of intelligence, different accents and physical characteristics. And not all of them were friendly. Some even committed crimes, causing Billy to be convicted.

After listening to the opinion of experts, the judge responsible for the trial of the crimes did not send the accused to prison, but forced him to undergo psychiatric treatment. Billy underwent treatments for 10 years and, according to the opinion of psychotherapists, he was completely cured. After being released, he created a small film studio that, without producing a single film, went bankrupt.

After that, he cut off all his friends and took an uncertain path. It is only known that he died in a geriatric hospital at the age of 59.

“The Camel Girl”, Ella Harper

Ella became famous for her strange illness. The girl was born with a congenital disease in her knees, which were permanently bent backwards, meaning that she could only move “on 4 legs”.

At the age of 12, the girl joined a circus of horrors called Harris Nickel Plate, in which she received the nickname “camel girl”. In advertising brochures, she was described as “a camel-walking beauty”. On her tours, Ella earned around $200 a week (the equivalent of $5,000 today).

When she turned 16, the young woman decided to leave the show and study. At the age of 35, she got married and, shortly afterwards, became pregnant and had a girl who, for unknown reasons, died before she was a year old. When the girl turned 48, she and her husband adopted a newborn baby, but who also died suddenly at just 3 months.

Three years later, Ella died and was buried with her daughters.

The Silent Twins, June and Jennifer Gibbons

In 1963, in Barbados, the twins June and Jennifer Gibbons were born, who later received the nickname “silent twins”. The fact is that, for a long time, everyone thought that girls were dumb; both were very silent and did not communicate with anyone. But this peculiarity was even stranger.

After moving to Wales, the girls’ parents realized that they weren’t mute, but that they just communicated with each other, in a language that only the two of them understood. They then tried to separate the girls and send them to study in different schools and communicate with other people, but that only made things worse. When they finally returned home, June and Jennifer isolated themselves even more from the outside world.

They spent all their time in a room, where they wrote a lot, especially about crimes and tragedies. When they got tired of writing about fictional crimes, they decided to become delinquents themselves. Together, they were responsible for several fires…
