The Andromeda Galaxy and its fascinating details – My Sky Map

The Andromeda galaxy is a neighbor of our own galaxy, the Milky Way. However, make no mistake: despite being the closest to us, it is around 2.5 million light years away, that is…2.5 x 9,460,800,000,000 km! Do you want to know everything about it, which, even so far away, can impressively be seen here on Earth?

Firstly, it has this name because it is located close to the Andromeda Constellation.

In turn, the galaxy has its name originating from Greek Mythology, where the princess, daughter of Cepheus (king of Ethiopia) and Cassiopeia, is saved by Perseus from a great monster (Ceteus). They fall in love, have children and later she is placed by Athena among the constellations of the northern hemisphere, alongside her husband and her mother.

It is located in the so-called Local Group, which is home to our Milky Way, the Triangulum Galaxy and 30 other smaller galaxies. In fact, speaking of size, our neighbor is a little giant!

The Andromeda Galaxy is 250,000 light-years in diameter, more than double that of our galaxy, which happens to house the entire solar system in just one of its arms. Can you imagine the size of our neighbor, then?

This means that, if we could cross it, it would take approximately 250 thousand years. Better to let it go, right?

Its shape is spiral, made up of many, many stars and believe me: it is coming to us!

Collision of the Andromeda Galaxy with the Milky Way

First of all, it is worth saying that the Andromeda Galaxy probably “swallowed” two other dwarf galaxies, incorporating their star systems. This study was carried out by Nature magazine and is quite interesting, but the collision of galaxies is something considered natural.

The Milky Way also went through similar processes and in the future the two galaxies will also collide!

But don’t worry too much: this should only happen in 4 billion years and the impacts should not be so catastrophic, since the distance between each star is quite large and there would hardly be a collision between them.

In 2012, NASA published artistic simulations of the studies they carried out on this event and the images are impressive. Check out!

NASA images show the collision between galaxies

About this collision, the images mean:

First row, on the left: the Milky Way, currently; First line, on the right: in 2 billion years, the approach of the Andromeda Galaxy, much more evident; Second row, left: 3.75 billion years, Andromeda becomes as evident in the night sky as the Milky Way itself; Second line, on the right: 3.85 billion years, formation of new stars and partial merger of galaxies; Third row, left: 3.9 billion years, more stars form; Third row, right: 4 billion years, Andromeda undergoes stretching and Milky Way deformity; Fourth row, left: 5.1 billion years, the cores of the two galaxies are two bright lobes; Fourth line, on the right: 7 billion years, the galaxies are merged and form an immense elliptical galaxy;

Probably in 4 billion years our galaxy won’t exist in the same form anyway. The Sun will be increasingly luminous in relation to us, and the radiation will have an effect similar to what happens on Venus – where the surface temperature melts metals such as lead.

Even though the Andromeda Galaxy comes at us at an average speed of 110km/s (yes, seconds…), 4 billion years is a long time and we don’t know what will happen to us until then, right?

The vision of Andromeda by the winner of the Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year 2020

Previously, we talked about how incredible Insight Investment Astronomy Photographer of the Year is, and about the images that competed in 2020, listing our favorites.

This year’s winner was revealed, precisely with the photo that depicts the Andromeda Galaxy, with the name “’Andromeda Galaxy at Arm’s Length?”:

This image gives us goosebumps, it’s so moving! The photographer printed a 3D support so that the camera, combined with the telescope, could capture this illusory proximity effect. This way, it really makes us feel like we can touch it!

One of the competition’s judges, Ed Robinson, even draws attention to the fact that it is super appropriate for the moment we live in – where we try to be closer and closer, making adaptations, even when we are far away.

The galaxy as a gift

Since you are interested in galaxies and the show that the universe constantly gives us with the appearance of stars, constellations and even the planets of the solar system, how about giving them to yourself or someone special?

Detail on the constellations and Milky Way on the My Sky Map

Our sky maps have great resolution and quality, in addition to being a unique gift because they show exactly what the sky was like at a certain time, date and location – whether in the past or future.

The details are very moving, and like the photograph above, they record a special moment where everything was perfectly aligned for that to happen.

You can spend several minutes contemplating this beauty and everything it means, right?

And the dates can be varied: your birthday, a gift for your boyfriend, wedding or even a thank you gift for a friend.

So, personalize it with a love phrase, the colors you prefer and have a little piece of this immense cosmos with you. Hurry before the 4 billion years arrive…then we no longer guarantee the integrity of the product! LOL
