Study shows how children perceive men with beards

It is very common to evaluate the face of others to try to pick up possible signs of character. One of the strongest aspects in this assessment is the beard, which has become increasingly popular lately. But, do we all have the same opinion about the beard? Everything seems to indicate otherwise. Children think that men with facial hair are stronger, but not necessarily better looking. In fact, children think that men like that are not the best fit to start a family.

We, from awesome.club, we love to analyze what children think about fashion trends and the most common behaviors in adults. So we decided to do more research on a study that shows how children relate to men who wear beards.

In total, between children and adults, 634 people participated in the study. The ages of the 470 little volunteers ranged from 2 to 9 years old. All were shown pictures of men with beards and asked who they thought was stronger, who looked older and whether they were good candidates to become someone’s partner like a family man.

The results were overwhelming. Most children clearly associated the beard with some personality traits. All groups questioned considered bearded people to be stronger and more masculine, but only teenagers considered them to be older men. The researchers revealed that the origin of this type of judgment is uncertain, but this way of judging tends to evolve with age because the perception of some traits can change over the years.

Both young and slightly older children and teenagers found men with beards unattractive. An interesting fact is that children between 2 and 5 years old associated facial hair with dominant traits; that is, they thought that a beard was a sign of dominant character. Furthermore, according to the children, men with beards are not good choices for a relationship and are not perceived as father figures.

To most people, men with beards look stronger and older, but they were also considered to be angrier. Another review concluded that men with beards are generally perceived as likely to have fits of anger. Without a doubt, the beard represents a very particular trait and children perceive it as a trait that differentiates one man from another.

But what about women? What do they think about it? In another study, they revealed that men with thick beards are more attractive than men with little facial hair or no beard at all. Both men and women said that a beard is a sign of health and a trait that suggests a man will be a good father.

These studies revealed that the physical appearance of people has a special importance in the way they are perceived, especially by children. This shows how humans project a range of psychological traits through physical appearance alone. This happens from a very young age and continues into adulthood, although the perception changes a lot as people age.
