Study reveals why for some women the first date is a chance to get a free dinner

The first date is a turning point in any relationship. It could be the beginning of a beautiful love story, a perfect disaster (the ones we tell our grandchildren in the future) or even an opportunity to have a free dinner. Yes, that’s right! A controversial study shows that some women are not really interested in the question of love, but simply using dating to satisfy their hunger and nothing else.

When it comes to the first date, there are no rules. Some people say you need to be a little more reserved and not show too much interest; others consider that you should let the moment flow. Still others, according to a study, simply date someone for one thing: a free dinner.

The research, carried out by Azusa Pacific University and the University of California, Merced, USA, was published by the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science. She makes it clear that only a portion of women act like this.

The study was divided into 2 groups: 820 women participated in the first, of which 40% reported being single, 33% married and 27% “in a serious relationship”. Different questions were asked that assessed personality and beliefs about gender roles. They were also asked if they ever came into contact with boys only to be invited to a free dinner and if they considered this attitude socially acceptable.

Of the study participants, 23% confessed that, in fact, at some point in their lives, they came into contact with someone only to be invited to dinner for free. Most said that they did it occasionally or that they rarely did it, but that they didn’t regret the attitude.

In the second study group, the responses of 357 women were analyzed and it was found that 33% had had brief relationships with men only to be invited to dinner for free, with no other loving intention. Meaning, they were also only interested in dating someone to satisfy their hunger, with no other intention.

But if you’re a woman, don’t be offended. After all, this is not very common. The researchers say that there are certain common characteristics in both groups and one of them is that the women who agreed to talk to someone just to be invited to dinner had certain personality traits. For example, they repeatedly behaved in a manipulative way and tended not to be honest with their partners. In addition, they had very strong and formed ideas about gender roles. That is, for them, men should assume certain roles and women, others.

Brian Collison, one of the leaders of this research, says that the scientists decided to carry out this study after hearing reports about this type of behavior in the media. He also points out that this situation can occur in different types of relationships and which is not limited to women—although the study was only done with girls.
