Strawberry legs: what it is and how to treat it –

You know what we’re talking about: after shave your legs, you notice that the skin is filled with “little black dots”. It’s the hair roots that leave the skin textured and strawberry-like in appearance.

Strawberry legs are a common condition, but that, of course, is a popular name. The scientific name is “open comedones” and it happens when the skin oiliness and dead cells, as well as bacteria, clog the follicles, causing the pores to dilate and darken.

The condition is not dangerous, much less painful, but it can cause some discomfort in terms of appearance.

WHAT CAUSES STRAWBERRY LEGS?

Strawberry legs happen, as a rule, as a result of shaving with razors. Not taking care of your skin after waxing is also a common cause – it’s important to rehydrate and exfoliate your skin frequently to avoid oil and dead cell buildup, for example.

Although harmless, strawberry legs can trigger other skin conditions, for example:

Hyperpigmentation: on account of appearance, strawberry legs can resemble the hyperpigmentation and even worsen the condition of people who already deal with it.
folliculitis: open comedones can be a symptom of folliculitisa common infection in the hair follicles that causes spots and allergies.

1

Exfoliation

Exfoliating the skin frequently is important precisely to remove impurities and dead cells from the surface of the skin, which prevents the accumulation of “dirt” that can clog the follicles and cause the strawberry legs effect.

The ideal is exfoliate the legs one day before waxing and once a week after that. Completing this ritual with good daily hydration is also important to avoid this effect.

two

acne treatments

If the condition persists and does not improve over the long term, it is best to consult a dermatologist and consider acne treatments containing mainly salicylic and glycolic acid.

To prevent the condition from returning, however, you may need to rethink your waxing routine – or rather method. The main thing is to avoid razors and opt for methods that naturally open your pores, such as waxing.

If, however, you prefer to keep shaving with razors, remember to change the razor frequently and always shave in the opposite direction of hair growth. Still, the routine exfoliation and hydration should continue as part of the process.
