Social media fever, aging app can be dangerous

A wave of photos of people looking ‘years older’ have been racing through news feeds in recent days. This happened because of the app FaceApp, which ages people’s faces through artificial intelligence. Available for Android and IOS, the application may not be so innocent and deliver users’ personal information to Russian developer Wireless Lab.

According to Kaspersky’s senior security analyst, Fabio Assolini, there is nothing abnormal in the functioning of FaceApp, but the specialist draws attention to what is collected by the program. “About 64% of Brazilians do not read the conditions of an app before downloading it and forget to think about how their data can be used, ignoring privacy settings,” he told Estadão.

Authorizations are in the terms of use of the App. However, the terms have loopholes that can even give access to users’ browsing history.

What data is disclosed?

There is monitoring information, such as cookies, small files to identify online behavior, and device identifiers that let you know, for example, what type of device the user has. The application collects the IP address, which is a kind of zip code of each machine on the internet, which provides the specific browser.

This information allows advertising networks to deliver advertisements to Internet users.

Data is stored on servers in the United States and the country still does not have a specific data protection law like Brazil. FaceApp is not headquartered here and this can become a complication if someone wants to sue the application in court.
