And of all the mascots, there is one that has become famous the world over: Nyango Star, an apple with the spirit of a cat that plays drums and promotes the city of Kuroishi.

Let’s get to know a little about its origin through some information that is on the official website. Shiro, a beautiful kitten, died at age 7 and was buried in a garden full of apple trees. After some time, the feline’s spirit passed into one of the fruits and gave life to Nyango.

Today, this curious mascot has the difficult task of promoting his hometown, rightly known as one of the largest apple producers in the region. The idea is to attract tourists and new residents because the population is aging too much.

Its name is a mixture of ‘Nya’, according to the Japanese, the sound produced by cats; ‘Ringo’, which is ‘apple’ in Japanese, and ‘Star’ – by the Beatles’ drummer. The first time Nyango became successful outside of Japan was a few years ago, when one of his YouTube videos went viral. However, people still didn’t know much about her.

At only 1.70 meters tall and somewhat oddly shaped, people thought Nyango would struggle to move, but that’s not true. In the same way that it roams the city of Kuroishi, showing how beautiful it is, the cat apple also plays drums with great technique. She even made a duet with Frédéric Leclercq, guitarist of the band DragonForce. Leclercq and Nyango Star participated together in a project for a Japanese television channel.

Of course, all this fame led her to organize concerts in different cities in Japan. Her fans buy t-shirts, cups and dolls with the image of the mascot. The sale of these products is key to funding her tours. According to statements made by his managers in a mini-documentary about the mascot, the money is all used to organize the shows.
