Salon at home: 11 steps to dye your hair yourself –

1. Sensitivity test

Do the sensitivity test: apply a small amount of the toner or color, already prepared, behind the ear, on the nape of the neck or on the inner part of the forearm. Wait 48 hours and observe if there was any irritation or itching.

2. Product quantity

Check if only one coloring box is enough (missing it at H time compromises the result). One package is usually enough for short strands and with little quantity. Those with medium or long hair will need two boxes. “Long and very voluminous hair may require up to four boxes”, says Juha Antero.

3. Not too lazy to read

It is worth taking a few minutes to read the explanatory leaflet. “Most of the errors happen because nobody reads this basic information”, says Juha.

4. Preparation

Go at least 24 hours without washing your hair before dyeing – yes, natural oils protect the scalp from chemicals. “But, more than one day, it will leave the strands too dirty and that can influence the color”, ponders Bruno Di Maglio, hairdresser at the Loft Hair Boutique salon, in São Paulo. “This rule only applies to coloring, as toners hold better with clean hair”, he says.

5. No stains

Before applying the dye, protect the area around the hair. “Apply vaseline or shaving cream on the forehead, side of the face and back of the neck so as not to stain the skin”, teaches Julio Crepaldi, hairdresser at Galeria Salon, in São Paulo.

6. Facilitator trick

Divide the hair into four parts with a parting from the forehead to the nape of the neck and another from one ear to the other. Thus, the result is more uniform.

7. Even Tone

If your hair is long, work some conditioner into the ends. Because they are more porous, they can absorb more dye and become darker than the rest of your hair.

8. Where to start

With the help of a short bristle brush (if necessary, cut the ends of it to make it tougher), start by applying the product to the nape of the neck, then to the sides and finally to the top and distribute the paint throughout the root, going first to the sides and top of the head. Save the temples and front for last. If you have white hairs, start with them.

9. Detail that makes a difference

With the paint still on your head, grab a damp towel and wipe the little strands from your forehead, around your face and neck so as not to leave a heavy and artificial look.

10. Touch of shine

When there are 15 minutes left to remove the product, apply the rest of the dye to the length and ends. Before rinsing, mix in a little cold water and massage in as if you were shampooing. This trick helps to give more shine.

11. Don’t Disobey

Staying with the dye longer than recommended won’t lighten or darken your hair beyond belief (nor will it permanently fix the color). Rinsing ahead of time (look, the rush!) is also a disaster for sure: the brown turns reddish and orange before reaching the blonde you want so much. Respect the manufacturer’s instructions strictly.
