1st day

Reflection: “A voice sang in the distance, between the moonlight and the stones.
And in closed palaces, given over to sentries,
exhausted from so many deaths, from so many wars,
Dreams trembled in the hearts of the maidens.
Oh! What a strange serenade, an echo of invisible parties!
To whom were such beautiful, blissful words of love addressed (from which divine poets?),
like those who walked outside in the streets and alleys,
diaphanous to the moon, grave to the stones?

Meditation: “It was Francisco’s voice, because Clara knew about the uproar in Assisi. The rich, ambitious and kind young man, son of a merchant and king of nights and sumptuous parties, suddenly took a fantastic turn in his life. Until then, his life was based on luxury, the pleasures and frivolities of the world. Some called him crazy, others eccentric. Clara allowed herself to be questioned.

For her, the new direction of Francisco’s life had become a thorn of questions. Francis spoke about God and with God; he spoke of God to all creatures. Becoming a man/transparency of Christ, the Gospel and the Living Message of an ideal.”

2nd day

Reflection: “Close your eyes, maidens, upon the strange serenade!
It’s not because of you that she sighs, in love…
Speak to Mrs. Poverty, the man who passes by in the night.
Through her he is transfigured, who is his Beloved!
Because of her, he forgets what he had: prestige, family, home.
Close your eyes, maidens! (But if you feel disturbed by the big voice
in the night the solitude of the soul, abandon what you have
and I also followed, without anything, this flower of youth that sings and passes by!).

Meditation: “Francisco is happy and, singing, he follows the poor and humble Christ. The Good News deeply touched the sensitive soul of Clara, who felt within her vibrating chords in unison with those of Francisco. It was then necessary to meet him. She needed to know that within Clara the flame of the new ideal of evangelical life was latent. It was the beginning of an indestructible friendship, whose bond was the purest and most genuine love for Jesus Christ.”

3rd day

Reflection: “Francisco had sung from afar, the jester of a dazzled God.
Whoever looked into his eyes would follow behind his pace!
(A son of merchants can be more than a nobleman,
if God awaits you with his moving embrace…).
Oh! What a heavenly destiny, to be poor and walk by his side!
Just perfect joy to carry a full lap!
Kissing lepers without feeling disgusted!
Convert men and animals!
Talk to the angels from space! (Ah, who was in the shadow,
at least, from this dazzled kid!).”

Meditation: “The discovery of poverty as an evangelical value, as interior liberation, as an imitation of the Poor Christ found the hearts of Francisco and Clara. They wanted to be poor and saw in poverty the condition for following the Master who says: “Go, sell everything you have, give to the poor and follow me”. Santa Clara followed her friend Francisco. Her greatest struggle in life was to be faithful to her chosen poverty.”

4th day

“Reflection: “Luminous voice of the night, happy for those who understood you!”
(In a highly guarded palace, a girl stood up: she could no longer be who she was,
so well decorated, with her embroidered dresses,
of velvet and muslin; He no longer cares about engaged couples: his life is another.
Close the doors, the darkness descends, which with its name illuminates.
What are tears? Walk through silence).
A vast desert field, the wide divine road!
Oh! Happy itinerary!
Supernatural departure!”

Meditation: “Clara, the first Franciscan, was a young girl at school who was 18 years old. Young, but mature to respond to the audacious proposal of donation and delivery that Francisco’s radicalism proposed to him. She gave herself to Christ the Poor as the Poor Virgin. Clara’s trust in the Father who takes care of the “Birds of the Sky” and the “Lilies of the Field” was limitless. She faced bishops, cardinals and the Pope himself in defense of her right to live the Holy Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ, poor, as she understood Him.”

5th day

Reflection: “Listen, noble nobles: the girl you created is a vague shadow,
outside your will, free from deceptions and obstacles.
It is a star that seeks eternity again!
Stripped of her jewels and her lavish attire,
bows his head with tender humility.
They cut off her braids: a branch of light on the altars,
clearer than your name, in the fire of charity
burn what was and had: surpass what you created!”

Meditation: “On March 19, 1212, Palm Sunday, in the Cathedral of Saint Rufino, the bishop distributes the blessed palms. Clara did not see what was happening around her, as it was the day agreed with Francisco to carry out his audacious plan to serve God in poverty; in the humility of Jesus Christ; and His Most Holy Mother. In the dead of night, accompanied by her cousin Pacifica and in a gesture of courage and fortitude, Clara intrepidly flees her palace. This, in her time and age, demonstrated that, in her radical choice, Clara was of extraordinary fiber, of an exceptional human and spiritual structure.”

6th day

Reflection: “The gentlemen returned, with great astonishment on their faces.
Sad palaces… Useless sword…
What great passions are hidden in the high walls!
In amazement, the people contemplate that arrival.
(Gone is the girl who dreamed of serving God, of vain glories forgotten,
of the separated family. No force to her vows will tear her away.
At the feet of Christ he fell: he no longer desired anything).
The merchants looked at each other, with great astonishment on their faces.”

Meditation: “Saint Francis, with his companions, awaits her with lit torches in the little church of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos da Porciúncula. There, at the feet of the Virgin Mary, Francisco cuts Clara’s beautiful hair. Symbolic gesture of total surrender to God.
The rich clothes are exchanged for a simple habit, brown, the color of the earth or larks; and, as a belt, Francisco hands him the rustic rope. The new wife of Christ was dressed.
Francisco takes her to the Benedictine Monastery where she would be safer. The family did everything to bring the fugitive home again. Clara was armed with the strength of God overcoming all threats.”

7th day

Reflection: “The oldest used cloth.
He ate the oldest bread.
On a bed of dry vines and hair shirts dressed,
on stone pillow, his short sleep slept.
His life had to be poorer and poorer,
between prayers and works and miracles that he performed,
to save aching humanity.
Hands on the altar, turning on lights, feet on the cold stone.
Humble, among her companions; in the face of evil,
fearless, sister Clara, in your monastery, tenuously lived.”

Meditation: “São Damião is a little convent outside the walls of Assisi. The little church in ruins was restored by Francisco. There is the Byzantine crucifix that told him: “Francis, go and restore my church”. It was to this place so dear to his heart, which deeply reminded him of his own conversion, that Francisco led his first disciples. The small, poor and humble convent enchanted Clara’s heart and quickly became populated with young voices singing the praises of God day and night.”

8th day

Reflection: “Forty years have passed: she is a little old lady,
the girl who, out of love for poverty, stripped herself of what she had,
She became a nun, and did so with so much…
