On the poetry of romanticism.

Sturm und Drang was the rallying cry of romanticism. It means storm and impetus; was created by a group of German artists, who promoted a true aesthetic and philosophical revolution in the arts, whose bases could be simplified into two concepts:

1- The freedom of the artist.

2- The notion that the only goal that art should pursue is beauty.

In this section of the Gothic library, we will give an account of the best poems of romanticism; but first we will give an account of some interesting details of this literary period.

Romanticism attempted, and largely succeeded, in stripping art of its moralizing and edifying shroud. For romantic writers, literature should only pursue an aesthetic goal.

The term romanticism was coined in England during the 17th century, and its meaning tended to express something “similar to romance”, which was nothing other than novels of chivalry, which were never liked by the wise.

France was the one that most tenaciously resisted the advances of romanticism. The freedom proposed by the movement clashed strongly with the classicists.

The romantic par excellence is a free being, and deeply pessimistic. Almost all romantic literature revolves around the supposed incomprehension that artists felt, which must have been the same more or less in all eras, but which here exploded in multiple forms and styles.

The romantic writer values feeling over reason, that is, voluptuousness over efficiency. Thus, romantic literature is usually delivered with voluminous corpuses, children of that same baroque tendency.

Other issues associated with romanticism are the supernatural topic and the association between love and death.

There is not much to add about the supernatural, since the ghosts of this period are known to everyone, but about death and love there are some notable examples of the refinements that this topic achieved.

To finish, we will use the wonderful effectiveness of Emilia Bazán, who synthesized the essence of romanticism in a few lines:

Romanticism represents three dominant directions: individualism, the religious and sentimental revival after the revolution, and the influence of the contemplation of nature.
