What is Our Lady of Sorrows’ day?

Also called Our Lady of Mercy, Our Lady of Anguish, Our Lady of Tears and Our Lady of Seven Sorrows, it is a way in which the mother of Jesus Christ is venerated. The image usually has one or more knives or swords going through the heart. They represent the seven great pains faced by the Virgin Mary.

The devotion began in 1221, at the Schönau Monastery, in Germania. Already its veneration on the day September 15th began in 1239, in Florence, Italy, by the Order of the Servants of Mary (Order of the Servites).

“Our Lady of Sorrows, I present to you all my needs, sorrows, sadness, misery and suffering.

O Mother of sorrows and queen of martyrs, who suffered so much to see Your Son scourged, mocked and killed to save me, accept my prayers in this novena.

Kind Mother, grant me true contrition for my sins and a sincere change of life.

Our Lady of Sorrows, who was present at the Calvary of Our Lord Jesus Christ, may you also be present at my Calvaries. I beg you for this grace that I need so much.

Out of mercy, O advocate of sinners, do not fail to support my soul in the affliction and spiritual combat that I am subject to at all times.

Our Lady of Sorrows, when pain comes and suffering arrives, don’t let me be discouraged.

Hail Queen, Mother of mercy, life, sweetness and our hope, hail! We cry out to you, the exiled children of Eve.

We sigh to you, groaning and crying, in this valley of tears. So, our advocate, turn those merciful eyes of Yours to us, and after this exile, show us Jesus, blessed fruit of Your womb, O clement, O pious, O sweet ever Virgin Mary. Pray for us, Holy Mother of God, that we may be worthy of the promises of Christ.

How to pray the seven sorrows of Our Lady of Sorrows?

Tradition remembers the pains of Our Lady: Simeon’s prophecy, the flight to Egypt, the loss of Jesus at the age of 12 during a pilgrimage, Jesus’ path to Calvary, the crucifixion, the son’s body taken from the cross and the grave. Therefore, there is an initial prayer, one specific for each difficult moment in Mary’s life and a final one with a message of hope.

Opening prayer

Your Divine Son has linked to the devotion of your Sorrows, particular graces for sincere penance, timely aid and help in all needs and dangers. 1st prayer

“For the pain you suffered upon hearing Simeon’s prophecy, that a sword of pain would pierce your heart, Mother of God, hear our prayer. Hail Mary, Glory.”

2nd prayer

“For the pain you suffered when you fled to Egypt, clutching the Baby Jesus to your virginal breast, to save him from the wrath of the impious Herod, Immaculate Virgin, hear our prayer. Hail Mary, Glory.”

3rd prayer

“For the pain you suffered when you lost the Baby Jesus for three days, Most Holy Lady, I heard our prayer. Hail Mary, Glory.”

4th prayer

“For the pain you suffered when you saw dear Jesus with the cross on his shoulder, on the way to Calvary, Virgin Mother of sorrows, I heard our prayer. Hail Mary, Glory.”

5th prayer

“For the pain you suffered when you witnessed the death of Jesus, crucified between two thieves, Mother of Divine Grace, I heard our prayer. Hail Mary, Glory.”

6th prayer

“For the pain you suffered when you received in your arms the inanimate body of Jesus, taken down from the cross, Mother of Sinners, I heard our prayer. Hail Mary, Glory.”

7th prayer

“For the pain you suffered when the body of Jesus was placed in the tomb, you remained in the saddest solitude, Lady of All Peoples, hear our prayer. Hail Mary, Glory.”

Final prayer

“Give us, Lady, the grace to understand the ocean of anguish that made You the “Mother of Sorrows”, so that we can participate in your suffering and console you with our love and our fidelity. We weep with you, O Queen of Martyrs, in the hope of having the happiness of one day rejoicing with you in heaven. Amen.”
