Pine nuts: extra energy – GOOD SHAPE

Traditionally, pine nuts are eaten cooked or grilled on a griddle, but little by little they are gaining ground in salads, farofas, purées and stews. Its nutritional properties are still little publicized, but it’s worth knowing. “Composed of 70% carbohydrate, 9% protein and 5% fat (the rest is fiber and water), pine nuts are considered an energy food”, explains Maria Lucia Masson, professor of the graduate program in Engineering of Food at the Federal University of Paraná (UFPR). Ten units of this Araucaria seed (a pine species) provide 282 calories. Is enough! So save it preferably before or right after exercise, when you need a little more fuel. Pine nuts still have a good dose of calcium and iron.
