The development of pimples on the head originates when the hair follicles – a dermal structure that is made up of hair or fur – are blocked. Thus, inflammation of the hair follicles is generated and prevents the birth and growth of wires.
To identify the symptoms of scalp skin infection, clarify doubts and present the most effective treatments, we consulted the doctor and professor, Dr. Simone Tavares Veloso (CRM-RJ 552181 | RQE 11249), specialist in Dermatology, member of the Brazilian Society of Dermatology and the American Academy of Dermatology.
Causes of pimple on head
The main cause of the pimple on the head is the infection of the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus in the hair follicles in large numbers, causing an acute or chronic inflammation of the area. “The excessive use of oily and silicone-based cosmetic products, applied directly to the scalp, poor hygiene and sweating contribute to follicular damage”, explains Simone.
The symptoms presented are small pimples with whitish tips around the hair follicles, and there may be pain, sensitivity, itching, pus and local redness. There are some risk factors that can make a person more susceptible to developing this condition: “diabetes, chronic leukemia, AIDS, obesity and seborrhea dermatitis favor the development of folliculitis, but there is no influence of age”, he says.
How to treat pimple on head
The proper treatment for a pimple on the head varies according to the cause and severity of the injuries. According to Simone, “they are usually cases of superficial folliculitis in which they re-establish themselves, but there are cases of deep folliculitis that appear boils, requiring treatment”. Check out the instructions below:
- Consult a dermatologist: the specialist will physically examine the affected area, correctly diagnosing the cause.
- Prescription of antibiotics: regress bacterial folliculitis.
- Prescription of antifungals: for recurrence of fungal folliculitis.
The pimple on the head, if left untreated, can generate a lot of discomfort, in addition to complications, especially the definitive loss of wires and the appearance of scars.
How to prevent pimple on head
There are some precautions that are essential and that must be followed for prevention to be successful. Below, check out the medical recommendations according to the dermatologist:
- Use conditioners sparingly and leave in only the hair instead of the root.
- Keep the scalp clean and free from abrasions and/or irritations.
- Avoid the use of hats and caps for continuous time.
- Use specific shampoos for cell renewal and preventing the obstruction of the wires exit.
- Do not scratch and/or squeeze.
- Avoid prolonged use of antiseptics and corticosteroids, as they alter the skin’s resistance to microbial flora.
