Orphan Adopted And Raised By Single Gay Father Becomes Olympic Athlete

In June 2000, Jerry went to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to meet Jordan, who had been living in an orphanage since the death of his birth parents. In addition to being very malnourished, the boy was full of scabies and other serious infections. Jerry managed to adopt him, took him home to Florida, took care of him and immediately became his father.

There were many challenges faced on returning to the United States. In addition to health problems, Jordan was weak and very tired, for the first few months together father and son communicated only in sign language.

At that time, Jordan was 2 years old and weighed only 16 kg. Very worried, Jerry really didn’t know if his son would survive, but he promised himself that he would do everything possible so that the boy would not suffer anymore. Jordan’s Olympic dream began at age 7. Tim O’Brien, son of a famous diving coach, Ron O’Brien, noticed that the boy had a knack during a jumping clinic. That’s when Jordan started being part of a special training program and quickly achieved his first results.

It was also around this time that he met famed Olympic gold medalist and LGBTQIA+ activist Greg Louganis. The boy came to be called “Little Louganis”.

After three Olympic trials, Jordan managed to fulfill his dream: he qualified for one of the most noble events in the sport, the platform.
