Together for 37 years, Jamie Lee Curtis and Christopher Guest sum up their relationship advice in two words

However, even though they have been together for 37 years, they know the work it takes to maintain a happy relationship. When he was 25 years old, Jamie “met” Christopher by seeing a picture of him in Rolling Stone magazine. The actress immediately told a friend that she would marry the boy. Coincidentally, this friend knew the actor and director’s agent and told Jamie so. She called and left her number in case Chris was interested, but he never returned.

Jamie says today that her whole life depended on a few seconds, like the moment she saw the picture of her future husband in that magazine. With this experience of hers, she has shown that it is really never possible to know what is coming around the corner, or what luck may have in store for you.

Jamie moved on, even started dating someone else, but it wasn’t anything serious. She had just said goodbye to her boyfriend, after a dinner at a restaurant with friends, and suddenly she saw Christopher three tables away. They exchanged a nod—he certainly knew who she was.

The next day, he called and the two had a first date. After a month, Christopher had to fly to New York to shoot Saturday Night Live, but they were already in love.

They were talking on the phone when Christopher, who was in New York, asked him, “Do you like diamonds?” Just four months after they started dating, they got married in December 1984, at a friend’s house. It was a quick and discreet ceremony. The bride and groom arrived at the house around 7:30 pm.

The couple adopted daughter Annie shortly after her birth in 1986. They chose to adopt after many difficulties in infertility treatment, but the adoption process was magical. In fact, they met Annie’s birth mother, and when they saw the baby, they were sure they could adopt her. Having a child really helped them both feel like family.

Jamie called the adoption of their second child “heavenly.” She would have said no to the other child, as Annie was only nine. However, there was a circumstance involving the death of a friend of the couple and thus, within four days, they adopted their second child, Ruby, in 1996. In 2021, Ruby came out as transgender and Jamie has been unconditionally supporting him.

Jamie’s famous parents had a messy divorce in 1962 when she was just three years old. When meeting Christopher in person, she didn’t smile much, as she felt self-conscious about the appearance of his teeth, so she developed her famous ‘mischievous smile’. In the photo of Christopher in the magazine, Jamie took particular notice of the actor’s smile and immediately considered him her soulmate, betting they would understand each other. “Behind that smile, I think, was a little secret that only I knew.” Both are also very fun and she understands her lover’s sense of humor.

On their 35th wedding anniversary, Jamie wrote her husband a song with the following line: “I feel safe when I come home and see you’re home.” Of course, the excitement and desire of the beginning of the relationship are encouraging, but a lasting union and a shared life are truly magical facts, especially for the certainty of not being alone.

They enjoy family moments, like when Christopher plays in the kitchen while Jamie prepares the meal and their daughter Ruby dances. The two appreciate the little things and value the quality of time they spend together.

Jamie is a realist, but considers herself “a serious romantic at heart”, and he is her “first and only” love. The actress has a pragmatic view of marriage and enjoys the security that the relationship gives her more than any grand romantic gesture.

Jamie has simple advice, just two words, for maintaining a lasting relationship: “Don’t leave.” The actress refers to the phrase, “Stay on the bus… the scenery will change,” as a metaphor for marriage. Any unhappy moments will pass, so stay on the ride. She respects Christopher and just doesn’t walk away, doesn’t give up on the relationship.
