New Study Says Cats’ Coat Color Indicates Their Levels of Aggression

Veterinarians at the University of California analyzed the relationship between fur color and aggressive behavior in domestic cats. Cats with gray and white fur proved to be highly temperamental at the time of vet appointments, while those with calico fur (orange, black and white) are the ones that tend to get irritated the most.

The study belied the beliefs that surround black cats. All-white, gray and black coats were associated with cats with calmer and less aggressive attitudes. Those responsible for the study established a link between such conclusions and the historical factor of the species. Because they are animals that have been around for thousands of years, dark or gray fur breeds may have developed in different environments compared to orange cats.

Despite the results of the study, it is essential to take into account other factors that can affect the cat’s personality. One of them is his ancestry. As with humans, cats are also affected by genetic traits from their parents. Personality factors such as fear, shyness, irritability and restlessness are independent of the home where the cat is raised. There are characteristics that are born with them and that determine part of their attitudes.

According to the American Association of Feline Practitioners, a cat’s first few months in its new home are critical in determining its long-term personality. It is estimated that if the cat interacts with humans between the third and ninth week of life, it will probably become less fearful.
