Mexican city to adopt stray dogs to help with police and fire rescue work

Obeying, respecting and supporting are some of the teachings given to dogs during the training phase. This situation changes a lot when the dogs that receive training live on the street, have been abandoned and are traumatized. With that in mind, the Municipality of Morelia, Mexico, decided that from 2020 onwards, stray dogs from the Animal Care Center will have a new opportunity. With the project, the authorities want to give these animals a new life.

The City Hall of Morelia, Mexico, recently approved, with a unanimous vote, an agreement that authorizes the Municipal Coordination of Civil Protection and Firefighters and the Municipal Commission for Citizen Safety to use the Animal Care Center to find and rescue dogs that will be prepared to integrate part of the canine units of the police and firefighters.

Once trained, the rescued dogs can be sent to the security facilities to work with search, rescue and rescue victims of accidents, in addition to other activities.

Carlos Reyes Reyes, leader of the National Regeneration Movement, explained in an interview that many of the stray dogs do not have the opportunity to be adopted, which means that many end up being euthanized. “We propose that some handlers train these animals so that they become part of the police. And I would add that it is not just purebred dogs that can carry out this type of work, as with a good trainer any dog ​​can achieve the same results. The point is that all dogs receive this type of training ”, she concluded.

The proposal comes into force from 2020. specialists when choosing dogs for the rescue work, they will decide which animals can be part of the project, regardless of breed.
