That Brazil is giant, we all know and we’ve even given shocking examples here. But another example of this grandeur is when we know that the country is home to 17% of bird species and 10% of amphibians and mammals in the world.
In this post, the awesome.club will show you a list of typical animals of the country.
Golden Lion tamarin
This “redhead” monkey became famous by becoming a symbol of endangered Brazilian species. Care for the preservation of the species, which is native to the Atlantic Forest and appears on the 20 reais note, began in the 1970s and intensified two decades later. Although the situation has improved, the risk of extinction still exists.
giant anteater
This giant that loves to eat ants — it can devour up to 30,000 a day, including termites — is also a strong one: at 2.20 meters, it can even fight a jaguar. And win. Although it originally exists in the three Americas, it has already become extinct in countries such as the United States and in Brazilian states such as Espírito Santo and Rio e Janeiro.
Jaguar
Despite being caught by a giant anteater, as mentioned above, the jaguar is the largest feline in the Americas, reaching up to 135 kilos. And, among all the cats on the planet, she is the one that has the greatest force in the bite: that’s right, more than that of lions or tigers. Extinct in the United States and very rare in Mexico, it still exists in large numbers in Central and South America.
Armadillo
The armadillo is such a traditional animal in Brazil that it was even chosen as a mascot for the 2014 World Cup. Remember the friendly Fuleco? They are often found in the cerrado and caatinga.
pink button
In addition to having this friendly appearance and this different color, the pink dolphin is also part of Brazilian folklore: when it leaves the river, it becomes a handsome and seductive man to impregnate a girl at the bottom of the river and then abandon her. The story even inspired a 1986 film: “Ele, o Boto”.
manatee
Of the four species of manatee found in the world, one of them is exclusive to freshwater and lives only in the Amazon region, mainly in Brazil, but also in Colombia and Venezuela. Although it only feeds on algae and marine plants, this mammal is not exactly in great physical shape. It spends half its time sleeping in the water and can weigh up to 300 kilograms.
Grouper
Did this fish look familiar? Widely found on the Brazilian coast — and in several tropical parts of the oceans — the grouper appears on the back of the 100 reais note. Also called chicken of the sea, it is much appreciated in gastronomy, because of its white and soft meat.
Blue Arara
This beautiful bird is found in 12 Brazilian states, seven of them in the North and Northeast regions and in all of the Midwest. Very sociable, they like to fly in flocks and couples are faithful and care for their young together. It can reach 1 meter from the beak to the tip of the tail and weigh just over 1 kilo. A work carried out to preserve the species, started in 1999, increased the number of individuals from 1,500 to 5,000 in the Pantanal alone.
Jacu
A native bird of the Atlantic Forest, it is known for helping to produce an expensive coffee. The grain is taken from the faeces of the jacu, which does not eat any coffee, but only the best available. A kilo of jacu coffee can cost 600 reais or more.
Hummingbird
Widely found in Brazil, the hummingbird has 86 species cataloged in the country (more than a quarter of all that exist in the world), 44 of which are in the Atlantic Forest. They live from three to five years, a long time for a very small bird, and they are among the rare vertebrate animals capable of seeing ultraviolet (UV) rays.
anaconda
Embra is not venomous, the anaconda is the largest snake in the world. With the strength of its “embrace” it is able to break bones and kill even monkeys, which it swallows whole. It also feeds on birds and rodents, such as capybaras and caimans and can reach over six meters in length.
