Mattel launched genderless dolls to stop creating stereotypes and labels

Mattel, known for products like Barbie, has taken a step forward on inclusivity issues. It recently launched Creatable World, a line of non-gender dolls that can be dressed and styled any way a child wants. This allows little ones to be creative and free when thinking or developing their own characters. The product is already on the market and costs 30 dollars (123 reais).

O awesome.club got to know the details behind the development of this product and the reasons why the brand launched it.

Mattel is famous for making Barbie, Hot Wheels strollers, and Fisher-Price products.

Barbie, Hot Wheels and Fisher-Price must be the most famous lines from toy maker Mattel. The brand was heavily criticized for having included, over the years, a number of questionable models, such as Barbie’s grandmother, pregnant Barbie or Becky (a disabled doll) that was immediately withdrawn from the market because it could not enter the market. Barbie’s house or in her car.

Now, the brand launches a gender-neutral line that you can customize

Over time, Mattel listened to its audience and released some more realistic versions of dolls. But for two years, the brand had been working on a line called Creatable World. It is a series of different dolls (6 kits), of gender-neutral figures, so that children can customize them with more than 100 pieces, such as hair, skirts, pants and other clothes.

The line wants kids to create their own characters, with the look they want

The product was tested with 250 families and children identified as transgender.

In turn, the director of consumer information at Mattel, Monica Dreger, explained in an interview that the Creatable World line was tested with 250 families in 7 states in the US, including 15 children identified as transgender. “There were some children who told us that they were afraid of Christmas Day, because they knew that the gift under the tree was not made for them… This is the first doll they can find in the tree and see that it was made for them, because it can work for anyone,” said Monica.

The product is designed for children from 6 years old

The non-gender-identified product has two style options, clothing and accessories designed for boys and girls aged 6 and up. The kits will be sold on the official Mattel store and on other sites, such as Amazon, for 30 dollars (123 reais).
