Make money or do what you like?

When it comes time to choose a professional career or if you are in doubt about which path to take, one of the questions that may arise is: should I do what I like or should I first seek good remuneration and earn a lot of money? After all, who doesn’t want to win well?

Option 1) Make money

One of the factors that almost all people take into account when choosing a college or profession is whether or not the area is profitable, whether it is possible to live well with the average salary. They also consider whether there are many opportunities and vacancies.

Naturally, the salary that can be earned in a profession is one of the questions that we have to think about. The problem, however, is when this is the only factor. Or else, the only factor is the number of vacancies that are being opened in the short and medium term. Why is this a problem?

The labor market is extremely dynamic and if there are many vacancies today or in the near future, it may be that when the person graduates all those vacancies will have been filled. It is also possible that thousands have thought the same way and invested in that specific training. In 4, 5 years, then, instead of having thousands of vacancies open, there will be a list of thousands of candidates and vacancies already filled. Which will make the average salary go down over the years.

Therefore, choosing only for money is generally not a good idea. The salary factor, remuneration, has to be taken into account. However, not exclusively.

Option 2) Do what you like

Working doing what you like is everyone’s dream. Who wouldn’t want to be paid to do something they enjoy?

When it’s time to choose, or change areas, the person then thinks about everything he likes to do and begins to dream of working and living from his dream. You can develop the idea that everything will work out, that – even if you don’t earn lots of money – you will be happy because you will have the pleasure of the activity at your disposal, combining your vocation with your profession.

However, we have to remember that even what we love to do can become boring or boring when we have what to do. It’s one thing to enjoy playing the guitar, it’s another to have the duty to play every day.

In some moments, pleasure as a duty becomes boring and the dream can become less colorful. If the person also chooses without considering the financial aspects, he may experience problems of lack of resources, and with that, frustration comes to the fore.

Option 3) Make money doing what you love

If we do something with passion, if we have real interest, we end up becoming an expert almost effortlessly. Or, better, with effort but with pleasure and willingness to keep moving forward. When we become specialists in something, we stand out from the rest (in the activity in which we specialize) and, with this, the chance to receive more money begins to appear.

The problem of choosing a profession only for money or choose a profession only because what we like is that, in the first case, we don’t realize that we will have to carry out the function for a long time (possibly years and decades) and this can end up becoming torture and, the money, a burden for coming with so much effort. In the second case, choosing just because you like it is leaving aside a very important factor in our culture, the economy, and, with this, limiting our comings and goings – and shopping.

The ideal is this third option:

Choosing what you like to do, becoming an expert in the field, and in the process of growing your profession, thinking about the best ways to monetize your talent.

Many people don’t think about this, but there are ways to earn money in practically any field of activity, as long as the person has business intuition, manages to sell himself (in the good sense of personal marketing) and publicize his work to others. too much.

I gave above the example of someone who likes to play the guitar and wants to be a musician, because this is one of the professions that is considered a dream and does not give money. However, this is not true, for all cases. Just as it is not true that every doctor will become rich or that every engineer or lawyer will be financially successful.

The path is, therefore, to discover what you like, your talent, and invest in it for a long time. It is estimated that to become a great connoisseur in any area it takes 10 to 15 years of dedication. Doing this just for the money can be exhausting in the extreme. That’s why choosing a profession just for the salary is silly.
