The answer is yes! This occurs when we combine a very restrictive diet and rigorous with overdoing it in the gym. “Moderate physical activity positively interferes with our organism. Exercises improve resistance, immunity, well-being and self-esteem. They are important not only for those who plan to have a child, but for everyone. However, when practiced in excess, they can disrupt the functioning of the body. In women, for example, they can lead to a lack of ovulation”, explains the gynecologist Georges Fassolas, specialist in human reproduction at the Vivitá clinic.

This happens because the excess endorphin released by the body when we move, decreases the production of hormones responsible for ovulation (in women) and sperm formation (in men). There may also be a very sudden decrease in stocks of fat of our body. “With rapid weight loss, there is stress in the body and a deficiency of nutrients necessary for hormonal regulation.

And then, you see: without ovulating, you also stop menstruating. Which is bad for women who are trying to get pregnant. “The lack of menstruation in itself does not pose any problems to the woman’s body, neither in the short term nor in the long term. The point is that the choice not to ovulate was not hers, ”says the doctor.

You should be aware of some issues. Interruption of the menstrual cycle due to training, if combined with eating disorders and a loss of bone mass, generates the so-called “athlete’s triad”. “In fact, the lack of ovulation is one of the symptoms of the disorder.” And this doesn’t just happen to elite athletes, see? Anyone who exaggerates in training and doesn’t have a balanced diet is at risk.

But what to do? First, keep an eye out for the signs. “Know your body, be aware of any important changes, such as missed periods, hot flashes and irritability”, says Georges. The second step (and the most obvious) is to look for a professional. “You have to have proper nutritional monitoring. It’s always good to stay active, but without exaggeration. And there is no problem doing physical activity when the person is menstruating, it has nothing to do with improvement or deterioration in performance.”
