How to remove ticks safely and effectively

Nowadays people seem to have answers to everything, and almost everyone seems to know even trivia as the best way to get rid of ticks.

Some people burn them with matches, others kill them by asphyxiation under a layer of nail polish or even Vaseline. Others think they will go away if we clean the area with cotton wool and a little soap. Honestly, maybe a spell is more efficient. However, experts do not have scientific evidence on the latter method.

O awesome.club found that there is only one surefire technique to say goodbye to these pesky visitors. Therefore, we share with you some important information in this regard. We also take advantage of this space to tell you why the other methods can be dangerous.

If you find a tick on any part of your body, don’t panic. The first thing you should do is take it out. Simple as that. Here you will find a brief guide to do this correctly and safely.

Take very fine-tipped tweezers and hold the tick as close to the skin surface as possible. Slowly pull up, applying even pressure. Try not to rotate the tick; otherwise parts of its mouth may get on your skin. If this happens, remove everything with tweezers.

Clean the area and your hands with alcohol or soap and water. Place the tick in alcohol, in a closed pot.

Ticks can transmit many diseases. It all depends on where you were when he bit you. Therefore, it is always good to go to the doctor so that he evaluates the need for some treatment. This decision may vary according to the type of tick — in Brazil, the most common species are the star tick, the chicken tick, the ox tick, and the red dog tick, more common in domestic animals.

The important thing is to take the insect to the appointment (inside the closed pot, of course).

Bonus: What You Shouldn’t Do When Removing a Tick

As we have already said, there are many recommended methods on the Internet to act in such cases, but almost all of them can do more harm than good. “We don’t recommend any of these alternatives,” says Jody Gangloff-Kaufmann, an entomologist at the Cornell Department of Entomology, USA.

Matches. Warming the tick can cause it to vomit into the wound. Also, it can burn your skin.
Vaseline or nail polish. Using these substances on the area can cause the tick to go deeper into the skin.
Soap cotton ball. There is a myth that the tick will go away if we clean the area with a cotton ball and soap. The Tick Research Center at the University of Rhode Island (USA) has tested this strategy and reported that this method does not help at all.
