The exchange of dead hair for new ones is normal throughout the year and intensifies at the beginning of summer and winter, when the coat changes. However, for each breed of dog, hair loss is different. “Short-haired dogs generally shed more than long-haired dogs,” explains Camila Guernelli, veterinarian at Pet Center Marginal.

How to reduce hair loss in dogs

🇧🇷 Your pet needs sun
Animals that live indoors, without many opportunities to get some sun, may shed more hair. Ideally, the animal should have a corner available with an incidence of sunlight – it could be a backyard or a space on the balcony of the building (protected against falls, okay?).

But always have common sense. “In excess, exposure can lead them to develop skin cancer, especially in animals that have depigmented or pink skin”, says veterinarian Marcelo Quinzani, from Hospital Veterinário Pet Care, in São Paulo. ”Before going out for a walk, apply blocker on the muzzle, belly, ears and other places where the coat is sparse and always use veterinary formulas”.

🇧🇷 Take care of animal hygiene
In general, it is recommended to bathe dogs every 15 days. “Dogs with dense fur should bathe at longer intervals to prevent excess moisture from causing skin diseases”, teaches veterinarian Gisela Malagueta. If the dog has short hair, brush it once a week. Those with long coats should be combed daily to distribute the skin’s natural oils and activate circulation. Take the time to observe if he has fleas or ticks.

🇧🇷 Complement the meals
Good quality dry food is the best way for the animal to receive all the nutrients in the right proportion, which may not happen with homemade food, biscuits and canned food. If the problem persists, there are vitamins for the skin that help strengthen hair and reduce hair loss, but there is no way to completely avoid it. “To administer them to your pet, it is important to talk to a veterinarian”, points out Camila Guernelli.

🇧🇷 Keep an eye out for diseases
They can increase hair loss. “When there is itching, lack of coat, flaking or wounds, the cause must be checked: it could be allergies, parasites, hormonal imbalance or seborrhea”, says veterinarian Gisela Wajsfeld Malagueta. If this is the case, take your pet to the veterinarian immediately.
