If you’ve been in the spiritual community for a while, you’ve most likely heard of Florida Water. But you may be wondering: What is this? what does it do Where does it come from? No, it’s not water from the faucet of a house in Florida in the southern United States! It’s funny how many people have this as their first thought, and it makes sense. But what is actually the reason for the name? Today we’re going to go over the history and uses of Florida Water, as well as a simple recipe.
What is Florida water?
Surprisingly, Florida Water started out as an eau de cologne in 1808 by a New York perfumer named Robert I. Murray. The name comes from the Spanish word for flower: “flor”. It was adapted for America from a popular German perfume created in 1709. It was considered a unisex perfume because of its sweet floral and citrus notes, but also strong spice and herbal notes. Back then, cologne was used to refresh everything, not just apply it to the skin. So it has a long history as a perfume, but where exactly do its magical uses come in?
Popularly used in hoodoo, voodoo, and santeria, one of the theories is that slaves used it in their magical practice to hide it from their Christian owners. This is the same reason hoodoo and voodoo spells are often used in the Bible today. Slavery was legal, and with no freedom in sight, combining African religions with the American religion imposed on them became a small way to resist oppression and preserve some of their roots. While the slaves worked, they used Florida Water to covertly infuse magical purification into all their tasks.
Florida water has become a staple in some Hispanic spiritual practices, but the reason for this is also largely unknown. Another theory is that due to the already established magical use of Florida Water’s ingredients, it was a convenient way to access its magical properties as it was something most people had on hand anyway. To this day, it’s still easy to find, affordable, unobtrusive, and readily available, allowing even closet witches to secretly infuse magic into their daily lives with it.
Ways to Use Florida Water
The first and most obvious way to use Florida Water is for its original purpose, as a cologne. You could use it in spell magic this way and enchant it to make you more attractive to others. As a facial tonic, it is said to heal skin imperfections.
Similarly, Florida Water can be used as an ingredient in a love spell because of its inclusion of roses. * It is highly flammable so keep away from open flames and do not use on or near candles.
Many people still swear by Florida Water as a panacea. It’s unknown why and hasn’t been proven, but it has stood the test of time. Perhaps it was the original claim that Florida Water came from the fountain of youth. Or maybe it’s just magic! There’s no harm in trying it to relieve fatigue, nervous tension, headaches and fevers.
Anoint your doors to cleanse and protect your home. In Feng Shui, the front door is considered the “mouth” of the house, the place where energy enters. The Florida water anointing purifies the incoming energy and prevents harmful energy from entering your home.
