The name, in addition to being the way we identify another human being, has a charge, a weight, that influences the way we deal with the world. When we think about honoring someone, we imagine that we want our child to have some characteristics of that person, or to be blessed by that person. And in this case, biblical names for boys are packed with meaning.

Choosing a biblical name is very common all over the world, as it brings a special message, inspiring stories and strong meaning. As several names are very different for the Portuguese language, we ended up opting for the more classic ones, also thinking about the sound and impact they cause.

Biblical names – Peter – He was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, but this was not his name initially. Before he was called Simon. In an important passage in the Bible, where Christ baptizes Simon, he says: “And I declare to you: you are Kepha and on this kepha I will build my Church and the gates of hell will never prevail against it.” Kepha, in Aramaic, means stone and, when translated into Greek, the name became Petros. Peter was also the first Pope of the Catholic Church.

Biblical names – John – John the Baptist was a Jewish preacher and was considered the forerunner of Jesus. His nickname was given because he baptized several Jews in the Jordan River, among them the son of Mary. The Bible says that when John was going to baptize him, a dove appeared and a voice was heard saying, “This is my beloved son, with whom I am well pleased.” The very popular São João festival takes place on June 24 all over the world.

Biblical names – Gabriel – He is known as the messenger angel of God. It was he who announced the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. He is regarded by many as the angel of truth, and is portrayed with a trumpet, which signifies the voice of God. According to tradition, this angel is responsible for bringing good news, giving direction to our lives and helping those who are lost.

Biblical Names – Luke – Paul’s physician and faithful friend, he was the writer of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. We don’t know much about his life, just that he used his gift with the most needy and accompanied the apostle Paul on all his travels. He is the patron saint of painters, doctors and healers.

Biblical names – Michael – One of the most important Archangels, he is considered the protector of children and the heavens. He is portrayed in both the Old and New Testaments, always leading a heavenly army against the forces of evil. When he is represented, he carries in his right hand a sword (fight and victory) and in his left, a scale, which symbolizes justice. He is invoked in healing meditations, prayers, requests for help in various areas of our lives and spiritual cleansings.

Biblical names – Matheus – He was one of the first followers of Jesus, author of the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of the Hebrews. He used to be a tax collector and many judged Jesus when he called him to be his apostle, but the answer was, “I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” He traveled the world preaching the word of the messiah and died in Ethiopia.

Biblical Names – David – He is an important character in the Bible. His story is recorded in more than 60 chapters. He is regarded as Israel’s greatest king, but he had a simple start in life. He was a shepherd and played the harp for King Saul. In a battle he slew the giant Goliath and thus gained the right to marry one of the king’s heirs. When Saul and his other son Ishbosheth died, he took their place, being adored by all for his courage. He brought unity and prosperity to the people. Jews believe that the Messiah will be an heir of King David.

Biblical names – Philip – There are some Philips mentioned in the Bible. The most famous are the apostle and the evangelist. The apostle is said to have performed several miracles, traveled the world, and died crucified. The Evangelist was known as one of the “believable men, full of spirit and wisdom”. He traveled the world also evangelizing and baptizing believers, as well as helping the most needy, such as widows and children.
