BUT IS IT SAFE?

Some considerations must be made before putting the avocado in bowls of water. An article published by the federal agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services (FDA) discourages the practice, due to the possibility of bacteria such as Salmonella are on the surface of the fruit, multiplying during storage when submerged in water. A Salmonella it is a bacteria that can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, chills, and in severe cases, life-threatening complications.

You might be thinking that the solution is simple: Clean the avocado before putting it in water. According to a study published by the FDA, the bacteria is able to infiltrate and internalize the pulp of avocados when submerged in tanks within 15 days of refrigeration.

Just because dipping avocados isn’t the safest thing to do doesn’t mean you should settle for overcooked avocados for the rest of your life. According to National Center for Home Food Preservationthere are other ways to preserve the fruit.

Place the ripe (or nearly so) avocado in the fridge, this will preserve its quality for a few days;
Freeze mature pieces, guaranteeing ideal maturation in the long term; Won’t it consume you whole? Leave the pit and skin intact and wrap tightly in plastic wrap or an airtight container (which prevents air from getting in and out) and place them in the fridge for an extra avocado day.
