Spending most of the day sitting in front of the computer is the reality of many people, but habit is the enemy of balance and health. Reason: prostrating yourself in a chair for hours on end favors the sedentary lifestyle and makes the pointer on the scale go up more and more – not to mention the reduction in blood circulation, the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and the onset of back pain. But rest assured, there is a way out of this trouble!

A new review of studies published in the scientific journal European Journal of Preventive Cardiology reinforced the idea that spending time standing up at the office is the first step towards a more active life.

The researchers, after analyzing data from 1,184 people, came to the conclusion that women burn 0.1 calories more for every minute they stand instead of sitting. The number seems subtle, but at the end of a workday, you can burn up to 54 calories. Put 12 months in the account and, at the end of a year, that’s equivalent to 2.5 kilos less in the balance. Not bad, is it?

But why is calorie burning greater when we’re standing? Is that to stay on two feet, several muscles of the body are activated and tensed. That is, you expend more energy to stand upright (whether walking or standing still) than resting in a chair.

So get up! Even if it’s just to go to the bathroom more often, take a walk around the office, talk to a friend or go drink water. Another cool tip is to order one standing desk: those tall tables that don’t need chairs. Oh, it’s just not worth investing in moving and filling the office drawer with caloric items for the afternoon snack.
