How do psychologists see our patients?

The majority of people who come for consultation do so motivated by internal needs for improvement promoted by states of instability. Patients who come to therapy usually do so when they are close to losing control, to hitting rock bottom. That is when psychologists realize the great strength and courage of these people, who instead of getting lost in excuses, face themselves.

Despite the many clichés and society’s ignorance of the functions of psychologists, Patients face therapy seeing in it an opportunity to relocate their lives. They will have to learn to unlearn the behaviors, habits and thoughts that have led them there.

I want to make the patients who come to the consultation known as brave people with a great sense of responsibility towards themselves, not like the “crazy” ones that a society full of ignorance and fear insists on selling us.

“Psychology, unlike chemistry, algebra or literature, is a manual for your own mind. It is a guide for life”

-Daniel Goldstein-

Psychologists do not give advice, we do therapy

If you need advice, go to your best friend, partner or family, they know you better than anyone to advise you. But if you need someone to explain your behavior and why you feel that way, choosing the techniques and treatment appropriate to your personal characteristics, then that is when you will have to go to a psychologist.

We are very aware of how difficult it is to make the decision to make an appointment with a psychologist. For this reason, we always try to give as much information as possible from the beginning and we try to ensure that during the therapy the person knows exactly what we are working on and why.

For psychologists it is very gratifying when we appreciate, after having worked a lot thoughts and emotions that were harmful to the person, who can now exercise control over them. When this happens, the patient feels much better, begins to do more activities, approaches problematic situations from another perspective and is able to filter their thoughts to see them in a much more objective way.

We are convinced that many people would take the step of Ask for psychological help if you see the results that are achieved, both on a personal and social level.

“The primary cause of unhappiness is never the situation, but your thoughts about it. Be aware of the thoughts you are having.”

-Eckhart Tolle-

We learn with our patients

Psychotherapy is an experiential and dialogue process where therapist and patient influence each other, with mutual learning and transformation. Not only the patient changes, learns and transforms, so do we therapists, to a greater or lesser extent.
As any good teacher would, our patients teach us by example. It is necessary to clarify what it means for us to be taught by our patients. In fact, when we tell a patient how much we admire him or her for her bravery or her decision, a look of perplexity and amazement appears on him or her, as if he or she does not believe that he or she is also teaching us.

All of us, without distinction, patients and therapists, are exposed to suffering and disappointment, while on the other hand we share a deep desire to improve our sense of well-being, enjoying greater joy and peace. Our patients do not come to our office to teach us something explicitly, but rather they do it implicitly. with his lucidity, his commitment to his own processes and his ability to make the necessary decisions.

“Psychology cannot tell people how they should live their lives. However, it can provide meaning for effective personal and social change.
-Albert Bandura-
