How being the father of an autistic son transformed Marcos Mion’s life

Marcos Mion was still a young man when he became successful on television. And it was between one recording and another that he took on a new and important role: fatherhood. In 2005, Marcos Mion already experienced the conquests of fame and success. At the age of 25, the young man was one of the main names on the MTV Brasil team, where he commanded programs such as Piores Clipes do Mundo and Covernation. Lucky in work and in love too! It was at the same time that the young presenter married fashion designer Suzana Gullo – and it didn’t take long for the couple to start thinking about the arrival of an heir.

The first pregnancy was planned. For Mion, who always wanted to be a father, the birth of their firstborn, in June of that same year, was like a dream come true. Romeo, named after the classic character in Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, was born prematurely. Suzana gave birth after seven and a half months of pregnancy, which required special care for the baby. With only 90 days to live, the little one had to undergo surgery to correct a congenital dislocation.

The diagnosis of autism, however, happened late. Mion only became aware of the condition when her son was around 8 years old. In 2014, he went public on the subject for the first time: “He is my greatest inspiration as a father, as a human being”, he confessed proudly. On his TV show, he even declared that he was an angel’s guardian. There began his journey as a social activist.

The TV veteran soon became an important voice in the fight for the rights of people with autism. And he defends himself against criticism: “In the case of my son, it is my place of speech. He doesn’t have the developed cognitive skills to claim his rights, to fight for what he believes in. So I have to speak for him. I have to use my more than 20 years of career to fight for him and for the more than 2 million people with autism that exist in Brazil”, vented the presenter in an interview with Conversa com Bial.

The couple had two other heirs: Donatella, the middle sister, and Stefano, the youngest of the family. Mion, then, had to explain to the youngest children about the condition of the firstborn. That’s when the idea of ​​The Blue Toothbrush came up, a children’s book written by the presenter in homage to Romeo. According to the doting father himself, the work teaches, in a language accessible to children, what autism is. In the story, Mion narrates the sensitivity and characteristics of the autistic character as superpowers of a hero.

On social media, Mion makes a point of exposing all the affection she has for her family. In public appearances, he is not afraid to open his heart when talking about his wife and children. In an interview with Quem magazine, the artist stated that being a father is his best role in life. And he added: “I think it’s very important, before having a child, to have a partner, a person to share your life with. In my case, it is Suzana, my wife”.

When it comes to the eldest son, the communicator’s admiration is so great that he is often touched when talking about the boy. In a conversation with Ana Maria Braga, on Mais Você, the Globo star declared, moved: “If love took the human form, the form of a person, it would be my son. Without Romeo, I wouldn’t be half the person I am today. He is a constant and daily reminder in my life that I have to be the best version of myself.”

In 2020, the creation of the Identification Card for Persons with Autistic Spectrum Disorder was sanctioned. Thanks to the document, the population with autism gained easier access to rights, such as priority assistance and preferential queues. For the presenter, it was a victory: “I can understand that Romeo is a transforming agent not only in my life, but, now, in millions of people”, he celebrated in a post on Instagram.

Marcos Mion is, in addition to a successful presenter, an exemplary father. In his craft, he excels as an admired performer who brings entertainment to the audience that follows him. In his personal life, he is a dedicated family patriarch, who goes to great lengths to show his love and admiration to those he loves most.

In his own words, “I have entertainment and art as a mission, but I have a purpose that God gave me as a gift. He gave me that purpose in the form of the greatest love of my life.
