Hibiscus tea: what is it for, how to prepare it and who should avoid it –

The fame of hibiscus tea started with a diet, which promises quick weight loss. But burning body fat is just one of the many benefits of this tea. Several studies have shown that hibiscus tea offers heart-healthy benefits, such as lowering blood pressure. In one of them, published in The Journal of Nutritionadults with high blood pressure who consumed three 20 ml cups of hibiscus tea daily for six weeks saw a decrease in blood pressure.

Tea facilitates digestion, prevents part of the absorption of carbohydrates and fat from food and temporarily nullifies the fight against fluid retention.

In addition, thanks to certain enzymes and mucilages present in the plant, there are benefits in different areas of the organism: in the stomach, they facilitate digestion; in the intestine, they prevent part of the absorption of carbohydrates and fat from food; and in the kidneys, temporarily annul the action of the antidiuretic hormone, when the body takes advantage of this to get rid of excess fluid. And there’s more: “Hibiscus has vitamin C, which reduces pressure on the blood vessel walls, improving circulation, and calcium, a very important mineral for bones and a facilitator in weight loss, according to recent studies”, says biologist Lúcia Helena Guerra Arantes, from Belo Horizonte.

The popular slimming effect of hibiscus tea comes from the fact that it facilitates digestion, regularizes the bowel and fights liquid retention (in addition to stimulating fat burning). But, after all, what gives hibiscus this power? Above all, the high concentration of anthocyanin – a pigment from the flavonoid family -, which has an antioxidant (removes a good part of free radicals from the scene) and anti-inflammatory (combats cell inflammation, allowing them to fully perform their functions again). Result: “The body stops accumulating toxins – enemy substances that make weight loss difficult”, explains Lucyanna Kalluf, a functional nutritionist specialized in phytotherapy at the Instituto Alpha de Saúde Integral, in São Paulo.

WHAT IS HIBISCUS

Hibiscus is a flower, and the species from which the drink is made is the Hibiscus sabdariffa L.., which has red tones and originates from India and Malaysia . “Hibiscus tea is made from the flowers and buds of the species, which is different from the ornamental tea common in gardens”, warns Maria de Fátima Ramos, homeopathic physician and member of the Brazilian Society of Phytotherapy (Sobrafito). Therefore, she checks the scientific name of the plant on the label.

WHO SHOULD NOT TAKE HIBISCUS TEA

Hibiscus tea is generally considered safe with few side effects. If problems do happen, they tend to occur with overuse of hibiscus supplements. If used in excess, hibiscus capsules, tinctures and powder can cause stomach pain, gas, constipation, nausea, painful urination, headache and ringing in the ears. Even excessive consumption of hibiscus tea can cause transient dizziness and fatigue due to its effect on blood pressure.
