Heat-adhesive patches: how to turn a basic piece into a modern one

The 90s are back in fashion, in the collection of big brands and also on the streets. Among these trends are the tattoo choker and chokers, but the patches also marked this season a lot and came back with everything.

Patches are pieces of fabric normally embroidered, with different designs and formats. These little pieces of fabric can usually be glued or sewn into pieces of clothing, especially jeans, and provide a modern touch to the look.

Stickers are an alternative to give a new face to a piece that is forgotten in your closet, or to give a fun touch to the look. Most patches are self-adhesive and can be easily removed.

Check out the tips developed in partnership with the teacher and fashion consultant Flavia Piña, on how to use pieces with patches:

jacket with patches

The jackets that can receive patches are of different models, such as traditional jeans, military and also bombers. The place of application can vary, being in the arms, in the region of the back, close to the shoulders, and also all over the front.

“Denim jackets are the ones we find most often on the streets, sometimes with just a single patch applied, sometimes in ‘super fun’ versions. Jackets with patches add a playful and fun touch to productions”, explains fashion consultant Flávia. However, she points out that these pieces should preferably be used in formal environments, which do not require more sober productions.

Pants with patches

For those who are more willing to innovate, pants are also good options for patching. For the more daring, it is still interesting to mix the patches with “boyfriend” model pants with a “destroyed” appearance, with rips and shreds.

The most common is to find patches applied on traditional jeans, but nothing prevents the application from being done on twill pants. About the placement of patches, Flávia advises: “The point where the patch is glued is the point of attention of your clothes. If you prefer not to draw attention to a certain part of the body, it is worth avoiding tights there”.

T-shirt with patches

Patches can be a great alternative to give an innovative touch to a basic t-shirt or even to give a new look to an already worn t-shirt. As Flavia guarantees, this piece is easy to use and can be easily found in department stores and is great for those who want to join the trend without making large investments.

The piece can be combined with heels to create a hi-lo look that mixes more sophisticated items and more casual items in the same look. Shredded denim shorts and flatforms complete the look, leaving the look super young and updated.

Shorts and skirts with patches

Jeans shorts and skirts are the face of summer and with patches they are part of the “fun summer” trend, as Flávia Piña teaches. In order not to take the risk of creating a look with too much information, it is safer to combine these pieces with plain tops.

To compose a youthful and updated look, it’s cool to combine skirts and shorts with patches, with t-shirts and sneakers, especially white ones. Patches are also great ways to add a fun and casual touch to traditional pencil skirts.

patches on the bag

“The most versatile of all applications, patches on bags are an excellent way to adhere to the trend, in a more sophisticated way”, considers Flávia, who also adds that this item is easier to use in formal environments, as it gives a differential to the look, but without exaggeration.

Bags in the clutch or wallet model are great for applying patches, especially when they are made of fabrics. But it is important to point out that the more sophisticated bags also receive a casual touch by the application of the stickers.

patches on the feet

Sneakers and Slip on are the most common shoe models to find with patching. They are certainly comfortable models that convey a lot of casualness, and are perfect for relaxed looks and for the weekend.

About the composition of looks with these shoes, Flávia comments: “It is worth betting on more neutral compositions, where the shoe is the accessory of the time”. Black or white shoes make the patches stand out, due to the contrast they offer.
