Gustavo Rol: A Magician of the Twentieth Century

John Paul is a recently retired academic with a background in psychology and philosophy.

‘A being human only in appearance, demeanor and heart’

is an extremely civilized man, cultured, spiritually refined, university educated; he paints and was an antiquarian for several years. But he possesses such powers that it is difficult to understand why he is not famous all over the world. Who knows, maybe his time hasn’t come yet. What Rol can do is terrifying. A witness feels like someone sinking into the depths of the sea without a wet suit. He provides fascinating and provocative evidence of transcendence. If you don’t get scared, it’s only because of his happy and playful nature… because of the wholesome vibe he emits. Yes, before his demonstrations, he tries to limit his amazement with appropriate warnings, because otherwise you could break

So said (in my translation (MT) from Italian) one of the most influential film directors of all time and a long-time friend of Rol: five-time Oscar winner Federico Fellini. He was interviewed by another world-renowned artist who similarly recognizes Rol’s personality, journalist and writer Dino Buzzati, best known in Anglophone countries for his novel The Tatar steppe.

Fellini’s views mirror those of another great artist of the 20th century: Jean Cocteau, who called him “The incredible rol that will not be believable until the day after tomorrow”. dr Massimo Inardi, an Italian physician and parapsychologist, stated in an interview that ‘near Rol…everything else seems to transcend any ordinary notion of human possibility’2(MT). The late Franco Zeffirelli, internationally acclaimed producer and director of films, television shows and operas, said that Rol was “sent by God to make us better – a great enlightened human being”. ‘ 3 (MT). Another famous writer, Alberto Bevilacqua, described him in 2000 as “…a writer of rare intensity, a thinker and a philosopher with religious convictions on a large scale.”4.

These are just a few of the many admiring testimonies from many very respected – and often very famous – personalities about the seemingly extraordinary skills of one of the most amazing figures of the last century: Gustavo Adolfo Rol (1903-1994).

Well known in some European countries and especially in his native Italy – where he has been the subject of many interviews, TV documentaries, conferences, round tables and 29 monographs – Rol remains, to my knowledge, almost unknown in the English speaking world. Accordingly, the purpose of this article is to introduce the readers of these pages to this most unusual man in a way, however preliminary and selective, while emphasizing that much more is known about him*.

Brief biographical notes

Gustavo Adolfo Rol (1903-1994) was born in Turin, a beautiful, mysterious northern Italian city ever hospitable to practitioners of the magical, esoteric and occult; and the home of the Shroud, Jesus’ supposed burial robe.

Born into a wealthy, upper-class family, Rol initially followed his father’s desire to follow in his footsteps and pursue a career in banking, which led him to live, work and study in several European cities. He studied law in Turin, medical biology in Paris and economics in London. He gave up this profession shortly after the death of his father in 1942 and first turned to the antiquarian book trade in Turin, which he practiced for about a quarter of a century and helped him to become financially independent, and later to painting.

Rol revealed that the events that would transform a sensitive but unremarkable young man into a practitioner of the impossible originated in Marseille around 1925. He provided slightly different versions of these events on different occasions; in later years5 he reported that it all began with a seemingly harmless determination to correctly identify the suit of playing cards in a face-down deck, an attempt he doggedly pursued for two years. He became more and more adept at it and fully succeeded in 1927 in Paris. It seems6 that he achieved this by entering an unusual state of consciousness, access to which was facilitated by an insight originally evoked – according to one version – by seeing a rainbow, which made him realize that green was the center of the color spectrum , and the key to all other colors. By concentrating on this color he had been able to perceive the vibrations produced by this hue and later discovered that they corresponded to those of a violin string playing the musical fifth and certain thermal vibrations. He saw this connection as a “tremendous law” and the very secret of a state of “sublime consciousness” that enabled him to accomplish the task that had occupied him for so long and catalyzed a process of spiritual development that led to a tremendous one amount of personal power. This frightened him at first and prompted him to withdraw from the world, taking refuge in a religious house near Turin, where he spent a few months. He seriously considered becoming a priest, but was eventually dissuaded by his mother, who convinced him that he could be just as useful to others by living in the secular world.

Beginning in the 1930s, Rol increasingly displayed an impressive range of what he called “possibilities” – which to us mere mortals are anything but. Franco Rol, a distant relative of his, categorizes them into 49 distinct, though non-orthogonal, types. They cover all of the phenomena normally classified as paranormal.7

Three of the better known and somewhat better authenticated accomplishments attributed to him are recounted below.

A story from World War II

Due to Italy’s armistice with the Anglo-American armed forces on September 8, 1943, the country is subject to German military occupation. In San Secondo di Pinerolo, a village about 40 kilometers from Turin, three men arrested on suspicion of being partisan fighters are awaiting execution by firing squad. A tall, distinguished-looking 40-year-old man, a former army captain, is granted an audience with the commander of the German garrison. He demands that these men should be released because the allegation is unfounded. Undeterred, the official wants to know what makes the man so safe. Rol goes on to give him a very detailed and accurate description of the contents of the desk drawers in the study of his home in Hamburg, including some very confidential letters. Amazed, the German Rol invites you to another demonstration of his skills that same evening. role committed. The next day the three men are freed. Rol will save not a few hostages facing execution by entertaining the officers of the German garrison with a demonstration of his extraordinary skills.

Rol’s contributions are officially recognized in 1945 by the city’s mayor on behalf of the Committee for National Liberation, the politico-military organization formed by members of Italy’s main political parties after the Armistice the Nazi-Fascist forces. A small square in the village still bears his name.5,8

‘Do not go!’

30 August 1949. Rol is walking with Jolande Sella and her father through the hall of the luxurious Hotel du Cap near Cannes on the French Riviera when he suddenly stops, alarmed by the impression of something burning in the immediate vicinity of a distinguished-looking couple nearby sitting: Count Cini and the Eurasian actress Merle Oberon. He asks Jolande’s father, the owner of the hotel, to introduce the couple and asks about their plans for tomorrow. This includes a business trip to Venice in the Count’s private plane. “Don’t go!” Rol hints. The actress agrees immediately, but Cini cannot postpone the trip. Unable to make any other arrangements, he decides to ignore the warning. The next day, the Count, together with the pilot, boards his plane at a nearby airport. The small plane crashes to the ground shortly after takeoff. The Italian mainstream press – usually no more inclined to acknowledge paranormal events than the North American media – covered the event extensively.8

The smiling portrait

Roberto Giacobbo, presenter of the Italian TV show Voyager (Rai2 Channel), November 7, 2005, recalls witnessing a bizarre phenomenon that occurred in 2002 at the home of Aldo Provera – Rol’s friend and executor – who he shared with his Crew had visited while filming a documentary about Rol’s life9,10.

Giacobbo relates that Rol was a frequent visitor to this apartment, one of which contained two portraits of Provera’s ancestors: Teresa Rovere and her son. On one such visit in 1997, Provera happened to mention an ugly rumor circulating at the time the portraits were made, that Teresa’s son had been poisoned. He wondered if there was anything Rol could do to help clear up the murky story. Rolle agreed. Moments later, the bottom half of Teresa’s portrait lifted off the wall by a few inches, accompanied by a flash of blue light and a loud bang. Next, Rol asked Provera to look at the folded sheet of pristine paper that he had placed in the inside pocket of his own jacket at Rol’s previous request. The following statement, in the French language frequently used by the portrait lady, was engraved on the paper: “My son was not poisoned, he died of a sudden intestinal infection”.

In 2002, during the commemoration of this event, Gino Toninelli, the show’s cinematographer, caught Giacobbo’s attention. As he surveyed the room through the television camera, he had noticed Teresa Rovere’s portrait changing expression. The somber, melancholy gaze gave way to a muffled smile. Toninelli could only take snapshots of the fast-moving, transient event11 witnessed by three people.

Did Teresa’s smile show her appreciation…
