“Great Green Wall” is being built in Africa to help the Planet survive a tragedy

At a time when the consequences of climate change are increasing by the minute, projects like the Great Green Wall in Africa give a little hope for the future. The idea of ​​creating a gigantic green barrier made of trees dates back to the middle of the last century and was first proposed by English forester and activist Richard St. Barbe Baker. But it was only in 2007 that this project came to life. Today, it is possible to see the first results of this initiative.

Since the idea began to be put into practice, 40 million hectares of desert land have revived, allowing the production of 500,000 tons of grain per year where there was only sand before. These resources are enough to feed 2.5 million people. If the project continues to develop at this pace, it could help some of Africa’s poorest regions, bringing life back to what was once just a desert.

The Great Green Wall it should extend to the equivalent of 780 million hectares, in an area occupied by 232 million people — more than the population of an entire Brazil. The construction of the Great Green Wall will not only bring life to many desert areas of Africa, but will also help economically more than 20 countries crossed by it.

For the success of the initiative, thousands of people are involved, especially with the planting of trees. This is a long-term project and will certainly take more than a decade to complete. But its results are unquestionable: it will provide food security and employment opportunities for the people involved, thus reducing migration, which is common in poor countries on this continent.

Once completed, the Great Green Wall will bring about several positive changes on the African continent, including:

Mitigation and reversal of desertification, land degradation and drought problems. Rehabilitation of millions of hectares of degraded areas in dry regions, whose lands will become suitable for agriculture. Creating more sustainable ecosystems in the Sahara and Sahel regions by improving the supply of natural resources, with an impact on soil, vegetation and fauna. Sequestering 250 million tons of carbon, effectively combating climate change caused by global warming. Dramatic improvement in the living conditions of local populations, creating 10 million jobs in poor regions. Food security for 20 million people who suffer from hunger each year.

The goal is for the Great Green Wall to be completed by 2030, having reclaimed 99 million hectares of currently deserted land. To achieve this goal, 10 million hectares will need to be restored each year until then. And, once completed, the Great Green Wall will become the largest living structure on the Planet, building a better world for new generations.

Being three times the size of the Great Barrier Reef, the Great Green Wall is destined to become the eighth wonder of the world.
