Gracie Diet: new program promises to change your habits in 2 months –

What to eat to gain a body with well-designed muscles and very little fat? A lot of people look for this answer on the social networks of the fitness muses – and “muses” – that have emerged in recent years. But how about drinking at the source of the Gracies, a jiu-jitsu champion family? On October 17th, we went to check out the launch of the second edition of the book The Gracie Diet (Benvirá publishing house), by Rorion Gracie, who lives in the United States and is one of the creators of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The new version brings, in addition to the food plan followed by the clan for over six decades, a program to help people adopt the habits proposed by the diet.

“One of the big problems with the first book is that people bought it, read it, but left it on the shelf. It’s no use: without using the concept, your health won’t improve”, comments Gracie. The way out he found was to create a belt graduation system, in which, just like in jiu-jitu, you change levels after acquiring skills – which, in a diet, are new habits.

The idea of the schedule is that, every two weeks, the person changes lanes, adding new habits to those already acquired in the previous stage. After just over two months, it is expected that she will already be a black belt – that is, that she has adopted a healthier lifestyle for once.

food combination

The Gracie Diet is famous for its proposal to combine ingredients in order to avoid fermentation and blood acidity during the digestive process. “Mixing some foods in the same meal is good for health and weight control. Those that don’t combine with each other will have negative consequences”, says Rorion, who, although he has no training in the health area, considers himself self-taught in nutrition. “The principles of our diet have not been scientifically proven in laboratories. However, I see my health, that of my family members and thousands of friends and students as a testament to its benefits,” he says.

Several celebrities have already joined the food model. Recently, actress Gloria Pires revealed that she follows the diet, which has also been done by her daughter, Cléo Pires. “I’m feeling really good. People associate the word diet with food restriction and it’s not quite like that. I can eat everything. No need to remove meat or gluten. The secret is not to repeat the same food for 24 hours”, said Gloria, in an interview with ESTILO magazine.

The method divides foods into six groups, which can be compatible or incompatible. Meet each one of them:

A group

Vegetables and greens (all); meats (all but pork, prohibited in the diet) and seafood (all); fat and oilseeds (avocados, almonds, olive oil, cocoa, nuts in general, dried coconut, sesame, butter, melted cheese): they combine with each other and with foods from Group B.

Group B

Starches (rice, oats, potatoes, sweet potatoes, beans (dry), soybeans (dry), lentils, quinoa, rye, cassava and derivatives, corn (dry) and derivatives, wheat (and derivatives). group A, but not among themselves (you cannot eat rice and beans at the same meal, as well as mix sweet potato and tapioca, derived from cassava).

Group C

Sweet fruits (dried or cooked banana, persimmon, fig, lime orange, papaya, watermelon, melon, dates, raisins), sweet foods (sugar in general, bee honey, agave syrup, cane molasses), fresh cheese and creamy (fresh Minas cheese, ricotta, cottage cheese, cottage cheese) and herbal or bark teas (chamomile, fennel, apple, mate, black). They combine with each other and with Group B foods, as long as they are not prepared with fats and the like.

In practice

To assemble the menu, you need to follow the food combination table. And you must take into account another fundamental of the diet: take breaks of 4 and a half to 5 hours between meals. “This is the time needed to avoid an acidic reaction in the body, which can cause health problems”, warns Rorion.

Do you, like most women, find it very difficult to give up snacks? The strategy presented by the Gracies is to drink coconut water or plain water when the urge to eat something hits. Rorion does not stipulate the amount of food, which will depend on the goals and needs of each one, but he gives some guidance for those who want to lose weight: “Manage your food intake and, as a general rule, stop eating when you reach 80% of your body’s capacity. your stomach”. Translation: Finish your meal a little before you’re full. Here’s an example of a day’s menu:

Lunch

Salad – use at least five of these items, always varying the colors: lettuce, arugula, broccoli, avocado, radish, onion, beetroot, cucumber, spinach, celery, bell pepper, bean sprouts (Group A). Include a portion of one or two oilseeds: almonds, chestnuts, walnuts, pistachios (Group A). Season only with olive oil and salt. Main dish: roast beef (Group A), wholemeal pasta (Group B) and cream of corn made with wheat flour (Group B). Drink: carrot juice, coconut water, or sparkling or still water (no lemon)

To have lunch

Sweet grape juice (moscatel) blended with pure açaí (Group C) and banana (Group E).

To boost the diet

Check out some tips from Rorion Gracie:

You have to eat for the purpose of nourishing the body. You must plan as if you were planning the trip of your dreams, but with the right to carry only one carry-on bag. So, you will have to be much more careful in your choices. Always keep a stock of your favorite fruits and vegetables so you have everything you need for your next meal. Add raw nuts – such as cashews, Brazil nuts, walnuts and almonds – to salads and cooked vegetables. They are sources of protein (but remember that, in excess, they are fattening). If you have a sweet tooth, satisfy your cravings with a meal based on dehydrated bananas, raisins, dates, persimmons, watermelon and creamy cheeses. It doesn’t matter that you have the most planned of weight loss diets; if you don’t develop the discipline to follow it, it’s useless.
