The sociologist Zygmunt Bauman always tells us about this liquid society “I want it –> I have it.” There where ties are more fragile than ever and where the need for immediacy sometimes prevents us from tolerating frustration and even postponing certain rewards to obtain better benefits.

Being prepared is always important, knowing how to take advantage of the moment is even more so, but our true virtue will be knowing how to wait for all the good things that in the end we will achieve thanks to our efforts.

The art of waiting involves being active agents who know how to build their reality while waiting.

It was in the 60s when Walter Mischel, from Stanford University, carried out interesting work. This psychologist who tried to discover what skills are associated with achieving goals and, consequently, with success.

The essential idea of Mischel’s study was to be able to isolate these basic strategies in order to train and enhance them from childhood. For it, carried out the following experiment:

He sat a group of 4-year-olds at a table in front of a jar of candy.. The psychologists told the children that if they waited 20 minutes, an adult would bring them much greater gratification.Only one in three children could resist the wait and, in turn, another relationship was found: these same students were more successful at an academic level.

Aspects such as the ability to achieve, tolerance for frustration, emotional control, Motivation and the ability to not give in to the “imminent desire” was what determined the success of these children.. They are dimensions that we can also define in adulthood.
