Whether by choice or out of necessity, women are increasingly following a gluten-free lifestyle. To meet this demand, large companies have already started to make their products available in a gluten-free version at more affordable prices. But, does the makeup you use every day contain protein ingredients? Pasmem: the answer is positive.

The relationship between the substance and your makeup may be somewhat random, but there is a plausible reason for this: gluten serves as a binder (substance that helps particles stick together) in most of your beauty products, as a foundation, lipstick, shadows and even creams. That’s because wheat, barley and oat extracts (look at the gluten there) present in cosmetics offer the benefits of calming and smoothing the skin. And vitamin E products (a common ingredient in body and face moisturizers, anti-aging products and lip balms) contain wheat derivatives.

The good news is that, in this case, gluten does not cause any kind of reaction on the skin or body. The amount of substance present in cosmetics is small and, as the use is topical, it does not have the same effect. But then why is there gluten-free makeup? For individuals who are extremely protein intolerant, ingestion may cause a rash.

For celiacs and makeup lovers, it is important to point out that some brands remove gluten from their products, but other additives remain, such as wheat oil, which is derived from the substance. So keep an eye out!
