These people ended up causing millions of dollars worth of jewelry, luxury items and works of art to sink along with the ship, ending up at 3,800 meters deep. But… what are the treasures that lie at the bottom of the Atlantic and why, after all, no one, until now, has managed to get them out of there?

On April 10, 1912, the ship Titanic left Southampton, UK, for New York, with 1317 passengers and 908 crew on board. According to various data, they took with them jewelry worth a total of between half a million and a billion dollars in current values.

The ship was used to send 60,000 postal packages and a few tons of various items to be sold in the United States, valued at more than 10 million dollars in current values. In the cellars there were furs, wines, champagnes, food products, books, medical instruments and even 2 barrels of mercury. Remember that, at that time, orders were all transported by ship, as there were no flights between Europe and the US — the first flight was in 1939.

As we know, through existing documents, a collection of diamonds whose value was over 300 million dollars was also transported.

One of the most valuable objects aboard the doomed ship was an 11th-century Persian scholarly manuscript by philosopher Omar Khayyam. The enameled manuscript was bedecked with thousands of precious stones.

After the shipwreck, the survivors and their relatives began to demand reimbursement for their belongings, which ended up generating legal disputes. The most valuable loss was a painting by the French painter Merry-Joseph Blondel, “La Circassienne au bain”🇧🇷 Its owner valued it at $100,000, or about $2.4 million in today’s values.

In the ship’s inventory of goods, 76 containers with “dragon’s blood” were mentioned. That’s what they called the resin of trees from the Canary Islands. The product mainly used for medical purposes and the quotations were quite high.

The most superstitious believe that this mummy was responsible for the curse of the ship, which ended up sinking. Many, however, assure that the story of the mummy on board is pure legend.

Another valuable cargo that was carried on the ship was a Renault Type CB Coupe de Ville. The owner of the car managed to save himself in the tragedy. After his return to the United States, he demanded compensation for the loss of the automobile from the White Star Line, which owned the ship. The compensation sought was $5,000. But in addition to her, the former owner asked for another one, for 300 dollars, for his 2 dogs that drowned.

Relatives of millionaire passengers who died in the catastrophe commented on the possibility of lifting the legendary ship. Of course, in 1912, the technical possibilities did not exist due to the enormous depth at which the wreckage is: around 3,750 meters!

In the late 1950s, the ambitious idea of ​​salvaging the remains of the Titanic came to the fore. The most surprising proposals were presented. One of the ideas, presented in 1966, was to cover the ship’s body with a certain type of plastic with water and let electric current pass through it. In this way, the gases produced by electrolysis, according to some scientists, would lift the vessel.

It has also been proposed to freeze the ship’s body inside so that it floats to the surface, similar to an ice cube. One of the most unusual ideas was to cover the giant with ping-pong balls or hundreds of tons of liquid wax. However, as you know, to this day none of this has been done.

As for the treasures of the Titanic, although the location of the boat has been known since 1985, nothing has been found so far. In the meantime, several probes have already submerged to the wreck site and recorded the submerged giant.

From 1987 to 2012, the American company RMS Titanic held the exclusive rights to carry out research and recover fragments of the ship on the ocean floor. In all, 6 expeditions were carried out at a total cost of 11 million dollars, in which it was possible to rescue more than 6 thousand objects. The total sum of the finds was 110 million dollars. They were personal belongings of the passengers, luxury elements of the interior and details of the hull. This, of course, represents a fabulous profit of 900% on the aforementioned 11 million invested in exploration. But the fact is that no gems or legendary treasures were found.

The Titanic, along with its mystical treasures, is apparently destined to rest at the bottom of the sea for a long time to come. The salt water of the Atlantic, for an entire century, damaged the metal considerably, so much so that any attempt to recover it with the help of the most modern technology could practically cause the disintegration of the famous ship.

A few years ago, UNESCO, the UN organization for Education, Science and Culture, became responsible for this valuable heritage. Now, the Titanic is considered part of the underwater heritage culture, so bringing it to the surface is no longer legally possible.

However, the researchers are certain that after several decades of the sinking, there will be absolutely nothing left. Underwater microorganisms and seawater will likely destroy the vessel’s remains down to the last particle.
