The 14 most isolated places in civilization they don’t want tourists to enter

Have you ever imagined what it would be like to live at the end of the world, where, within a radius of a thousand kilometers, there is not a living soul? Despite technology and advances in transport, there are still places that are not easy to reach today. At best, a multi-day trip awaits you to cross to the other side of the ocean, and at worst, there’s a trek on foot, descending mountain paths and even dodging spears and arrows from hostile Indians.

O awesome.club discovered which places are worthy of the title of “places furthest from civilization” and reveals them now to you.

1. Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, in Tristan da Cunha

One of the most distant places on the planet is located in the Pacific Ocean: the Tristan da Cunha islands. In the center of the island archipelago there is a small civilization: Edinburgh of the Seven Seas. Only 270 people live in this small town. Another curiosity: each of them is descended from the first settlers, who landed on the island in the 19th century.

Edinburgh has a college called St. Mary, an infirmary, a mess hall, a shop, mail services and two churches. If the inhabitants need some kind of product from the mainland, the order must be placed a few months in advance, so that it is delivered on a ship that passes through the island.

If someone wants to get to the island, it won’t be easy: there are no airports for commercial flights, nor for any kind of special direct flight to the island… Approximately once a month, a fishing vessel arrives on the island. For this reason, a large number of tourists choose to go there on their own yachts.

2. Whittier, Alaska

In the town of Whittier, only 218 people live. It was founded in 1969 and almost the entire population lives in an old 14-story barracks. It is located on the coast of Prince William Sound, Alaska.

To get to Whittier, you can use different means: land, car or train; maritime, in any boat; and aerial, but only in the summer season. In winter (which lasts from October to April), the city is covered by a layer of one meter of snow, which reaches a speed of a few tens of kilometers per hour, which is a completely normal phenomenon in this place. The weather is so harsh that children have to go to school through a tunnel from home.

3. Villa Las Estrellas, in the Antarctic Region

In Villa Las Estrellas the inhabitants are mostly groups of soldiers and scientists, because, initially, the settlement was built from air bases and research laboratories. Even Stephen Hawking came to visit this place. The population of the city is around 120 people in the summer and only 80 in the winter, since during extremely low temperatures (it is normal to reach −50º C) many people send their families to other continents.

Anyone who wants to live in this small town, which is at the “end of the world”, must remove their appendix. That’s because the nearest clinic is thousands of kilometers away. There are doctors in town, but none of them are surgeons.

4. Mêdog, in China

East of the inaccessible Himalayan mountains, far from civilization, is the Chinese city of Mêdog, with a population of around 10,000. Until 2013, when a road connecting the city to the “outside world” was built, unofficially, it was known as the “mysterious lotus” because of the difficulty of access. It was possible to reach the site only through mountain roads. However, due to bad weather conditions, they only work a few months a year.

Even with the appearance of a real path, the authorities are in no hurry to open the doors to the throngs of tourists. The local fear is that the influx of tourists will destroy the nature of the eastern mountain, which is why the number of visitors is regulated.

5. Deception Island, Antarctica

The volcanic island called Deception is 60% covered by ice. Its own volcano shows some signs of life: its last strong activity was recorded in the 90’s. This place attracts tourists due to its thermal waters. However, it is still dangerous. If, by chance, you alternate the water, mixing hot and cold sources, it is possible to burn yourself deeply or, on the contrary, to become a little frozen.

Normally, only local employees of scientific stations live on the island. In addition, in Disappointment there are a large number of colonies of penguins that do not fear people. Therefore, this is a true paradise for ornithologists: despite the climate with temperatures below zero, 8 species of birds live on the site.

6. Pitcairn Islands, southern part of the Pacific Ocean

The Pitcairn archipelago is made up of 5 islands, of which only one (which has the same name as the archipelago) is inhabited. In the others, there are no sources of fresh water supply. However, only 50 people live on this island. This territory is considered the least populated on the planet.

7. Cocos (Keeling) Islands, Australia

The coconut archipelago is a group of 27 coral islands, of which only 2 are inhabited: West Island and Isla Home. It has a population of 600 people, almost all of whom are involved in the cultivation of coconut trees and airport services.

The main tourist attractions: resting on the beach and taking boat trips. In addition, Keeling is considered a paradise for diving: there are more than 500 types of fish and more than 100 types of corals.

8. Supai, Arizona

Supai is one of the least populated places in the USA and it is very difficult to get there. The city has a population of 600 people and is located at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, whose depth averages more than 1 km. There are two possible ways to reach the place: by plane or by mountain trails (mules are used for this).

9. Kalaupapa, Hawaii

In the late 19th century, the Hawaiian government, in the fight against the spread of leprosy, sent some 8,000 infected people to distant Cape Kalaupapa on the island of Moloka’i. The main island is isolated by high cliffs and to the east, north and west it is bordered by the open ocean.

The settlers were left to their own devices until the first half of the 20th century, when the government built some houses and hospitals in Kalaupapa. The law on the exile of lepers was amended in 1969, but a large number of the population refused to renounce the civilized world.

Currently, there is a Great National Park, located in Kalaupapa. Tourists are prohibited from taking photographs of locals and traveling through the territory without a guide. It is possible to get there through 3 ways: plane, on foot or on mule.

10. Ittoqqortoormiit, in Greenland

Getting to Ittoqqortoormiit is as difficult as pronouncing its name: a couple of months a year, twice a week, a plane leaves from Iceland to this town, but after landing, you have to fly by helicopter if you’re lucky, or sail into town. through boats. In this place, which is far from civilization, live about 500 people.

When it comes to entertainment, Ittoqqortoormiit has a bar, a store with essentials and a post office. Tourists can ride dog sleds, hunt or kayak.

11. Cape York Peninsula, Australia

There live mainly aborigines, forming a population that is around 18 thousand people. Twice a year, they organize an open festival of Aboriginal cultures with traditional dances, rituals and walks through the secret forest.

12. La Rinconada, in Peru

La Rinconada is the highest settlement on the planet. The village is located 5,000 meters above sea level and therefore there is oxygen deficiency and different temperature changes (during the day, temperatures above zero and at night, below zero). However, this does not prevent 30,000 inhabitants from living there, as there are huge deposits of gold ore.

Initially, indigenous people lived in this territory, but after discovering a source of natural resources, the prospectors began to inhabit the place. Over time, the small village became a complete city, but without basic services: the locals have a lot of problems with sewage, and the land is poisonous due to the mercury released in the gold mining process.

13. North Sentinel Island, in the Bay of Bengal

On North Sentinel Island, off the coast of Burma, live indigenous people who have not even learned to make fire. Over the centuries, they avoided any contact with the outside world and tried to eliminate people arriving on the island, using weapons such as bows and handcrafted spears.

The aborigines have dark skin, curly hair and a height between 1.40 to 1.50 m. Formally, they are under the authority of the government of India. However, government agencies decided not to try to establish contact with the tribe and therefore North Sentinel Island is considered a sovereign territory, which does not belong to anyone.

Anthropologists assume that between 2 and 3 families live on the site and that the total sum is approximately 40 people. But it’s impossible to know for sure: the tribe steadfastly protects its dense forests. It is known that the sentinels do not have an occupation to work in agriculture and that they feed on hunting and gathering.

14. Kerguelen, in the southern Indian Ocean

There are no permanent residents on this island in the Antarctic region. In the winter months, around 70 people live and work there. In summer, just over 100. Most are meteorologists, who make observations and launch meteorological rockets.

The most uncomfortable thing on the island is the wind, which often reaches speeds of 150 to 200 kilometers per hour. In addition, there is practically never a pleasant temperature there and, rarely, the thermometers reach 15º C in the summer.

Large colonies of penguins and seals inhabit the archipelago. There also lives a great…
