Faculty of Psychology at a distance: does it exist?

With the growth of our website and the increase in the number of views of texts and comments, I see that many people – from all over Brazil – have the dream of studying psychology at university. As Brazil is a continental country, thousands of cities do not offer psychology colleges. For certain regions, it is not even possible to find a college relatively close.

With this, the question arises: is there a faculty of psychology online, at a distance?

For those who don’t know, EAD means Distance Learning. With the expansion of the internet, distance courses had an increase in the number of vacancies worldwide. Although we can still locate the origin of distance learning through the mail, it was only with the popularization of broadband and the mass sales of computers and notebooks that distance learning was consolidated.

An incredible project that exists in our country and that few people know about is the offer of vacancies in Federal Universities, at a distance and free of charge.

In short, the Brazilian Government – ​​for some years now – has been offering undergraduate courses over the internet. the courses are: pedagogy, history, philosophy, letters (portuguese – english), administration, public administration, geography, chemistry, mathematics. If you enroll in the entrance exam and enter these faculties, you can take the entire course online, receive free handouts and take tests every month or every two months at the on-site support center. The ideal is to choose a hub in your city or nearby city, so you don’t have to travel long distances monthly or bimonthly.

In addition to public colleges, which are free, there are private colleges that also offer the possibility of studying at a distance. In private colleges, there are other possibilities such as: economics, human resources, information systems, visual arts, accounting sciences.

Knowing this possibility, many people search for the college of psychology at a distance.

Is there a faculty of psychology at a distance?

No, there is no online psychology faculty. Although this information may come with some disappointment for those who would like to attend this college and are unable to move to a city where the course is offered, it is important to know why this course is offered. is not and will not be offered in EAD mode.

As well as courses in medicine, dentistry, in short, courses related to the health area, it is not possible to have a distance course in psychology because we have several classes in the laboratory. To name a few: anatomy and neuroanatomy, behavioral psychology subjects in which we carry out specific experiments (also in the laboratory), internships in different areas: clinical, organizational, social, etc.

With the need to be in person at the university, it is not possible to create a distance psychology course. A blended course could be created, with online classes and face-to-face classes, but this is still a remote and unlikely possibility.

What to do then?

Alternatives to distance psychology college

If you dream of studying Psychology, but live far from a public or private college that offers the course, there are alternatives, as we don’t have an online course available. Two courses that are offered by the Federal Universities are similar in subjects and objectives:

🇧🇷 Faculty Pedagogy: about 20% of the disciplines at the pedagogy faculty are close to the psychology faculty. At UFSJ, Federal University of São João del-Rei, where I studied, I met several people who were studying pedagogy and wanted to transfer to psychology. As for one reason or another they hadn’t managed to get into psychology, they decided to study pedagogy, take similar subjects and then asked for a transfer.

In the same way that I, who am a psychologist, can attend the pedagogy faculty and eliminate subjects and take the course every 4 years, the same happens: whoever takes pedagogy first manages to use the disciplines of pedagogy in psychology.

If the objective is to work with psychology (and even if after graduating in pedagogy it is not possible to do psychology), there is an area of ​​pedagogy that is close to psychology: psychopedagogy. As a psychopedagogue, the professional can have his own office and assist children with learning difficulties.

🇧🇷 business school: this other alternative is also interesting for those who want to study psychology, but, contrary to being interested in the practice, want to work in small, medium or large companies. By doing administration it is possible to carry out job interviews, group dynamics, competence assessment, etc. The only difference is in the application of psychological tests, which are restricted to those who have a psychology degree.

After graduating in administration, it is also possible to do a postgraduate degree in psychology: such as organizational psychology, human resources, people management, among others.

Thus, if you want to study psychology but are unable to afford it (financially or moving to another city), I suggest that you take a distance course in pedagogy or business administration. Having a diploma is always useful and in the distance learning system we have many facilities, we can study at home, we have less training costs, in short, everything is facilitated.
