Enochian Dictionary: John Dee’s Fallen Angels and The Book of Enoch

Enochian Dictionary is a book on angelology by linguist Donald C. Laycock, published in 2001 under the title: The Complete Enochian Dictionary: A Dictionary of the Angelic Language.

This book is based on the work of occultist John Dee, who believed he discovered the ancient language of angels, known as Enochian, with his assistant, the medium Edward Kelly.

John Dee (1527-1608), was the personal astrologer of Queen Elizabeth I of England. Together with his official medium, Edward Kelly (1555-1597), they managed to “translate” the language of the angels, whose rules were given to them through long and exhausting spiritualist sessions.

The Enochian language is supposedly the language spoken by the angels in The Book of Enoch (Sefer Enoch), a work that does not participate in the Catholic canon but is accepted by numerous dissident churches.

The discovery of Enochian occurred on March 8, 1581. We can basically think of it as the common language between angels and humans before the fall of the Tower of Babel; whose alphabet, grammar and syntax, remained in the most scrupulous mystery until John Dee and Edward Kelley received them from those same angels.

But the Enochian language is not only a mythical language, such as the Adamic Language, Transitus Fluvii or Voynichés, but a language whose use is also a form of magic.

He who can speak the language of angels will also be able to use the secret magic that lies beneath the words.

The Enochian that John Dee and Edward Kelly received is summarized in 49 sacred tablets. Each of them has a grammatical nucleus known as “Enochian calls.”

The angels themselves who visited John Dee and Edward Kelley explained that each celestial body has a particular angel, a Planetary Logos, which can be invoked on its corresponding day. In turn, each day of the week, and even each hour, is governed by a complex hierarchy of angels that relate to each other.

This same mythical pattern is found in the Perelandra trilogy, by CS Lewis, and in the germ of the monumental work of his great friend, JRR Tolkien: The Lord of the Rings, and perhaps in all myths. of Middle Earth.

Nor is John Dee’s appearance in numerous Gothic novels capricious. Charles Maturin, for example, mentions it in Melmoth the Wanderer; Gustav Meyrink makes him the protagonist of The Angel of the Western Window (Der engel vom westlichen fenster); and HP Lovecraft makes him an unexpected translator of the Necronomicon in The Dunwich Horror.

Now, how did John Dee and Edward Kelley receive the Enochian language? Through a device known as a Practice Table, on which a speculum was placed, that is, an obsidian sphere that facilitated and amplified spiritual communication. Currently, this sphere is in the British Museum.

Enochian is a complex language, composed of strange signs and symbols that, presumably, operate according to the rules of our alphabets. The Archangel Gabriel, one of the communicating angels, was the one who provided the keys to understand it. For many, Enochian would be the cryptic language of the Voynich Manuscript, although there does not seem to be a direct relationship with the language of John Dee.

As we said before, Enochian is a form of magic. To speak it is to summon and use the powers that inhabit the cosmos. This art, known as the Enochian System, maintains that Enochian, by its very structure, is the most powerful form of magic in the universe. Perhaps that is why very few have managed to master it. After the deaths of John Dee and Edward Kelley the Enochian fell into oblivion. It was only recovered when Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers and his wife, Moina Mathers, incorporated it into the dark rites of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
