Dressing Well Boosts Performance, Study Says

Several studies have already shown that appearance has a relevant impact on our professional success. And this happens in two ways: our self-image and the perception that others have of us.

In a study published in 2014 by Journal of Experimental Psychology, Michael W. Krausassistant professor of organizational behavior at Yale College of Businessshowed that appropriate clothing is capable of improving professional performance in “high-risk” competitive tasks.

The study subjected 128 men, with varying backgrounds and income levels, to simulated negotiation scenarios. They were divided into three groups and given different outfits:

suits and shoes sweatpants, white t-shirts and sandals “neutral” clothes they were already wearing

At the end of the year, the suit group was less willing to compromise in negotiations, lowering its initial offer by an average of only US$ 830,000, while sweatshirts lost US$ 2.81 million and neutrals took US$ 1 .58 million.

According to the study, the difference in performance is due to two factors simultaneously:

internal aspects: the use of formal clothes increased the level of self-confidence of participants dressed in this way, who “become aware of the respect they are receiving and thus become stronger”, according to Kraus

external aspects: dressing elegantly directly influences others’ perception of your success and potential, and this gives you an advantage in value presentations and negotiations

It is important to point out that not all professions and ways of acting are compatible with the use of formal attire such as a suit, but being well dressed does not depend on the “dress code”. In times of home office, many people opt for the good old sweatshirt to work from home, but this causes the brain to remain in “leisure” mode and not produce at its full capacity.

In addition, good personal presentation opens many doors and generates credibility in any situation. Remember the popular saying: “it’s not enough to be, you have to look like it”.
