dreams and desires

Since the most distant times, the world has been interested in the interpretation of dreams. The prehistoric vision was related to divine and demonic revelations, and had the purpose of predicting the future.

Ancient peoples expected important consequences from dreams, but it was impossible to say whether dreams were making important communications, this was an incentive to devise an understandable and meaningful method for dreams.

Maury said “We dream of what we have seen, said, wished or done” and it was Sigmund Freud who proved that dreams can be interpreted. Freud found that each fragment has a different meaning in different people and contexts, this deciphering method displaces dream guides where everything is standardized, each individual is a unique being, with their own experiences, so it would be a mistake to say that the roller coaster of my dream has the same meaning as the roller coaster of someone else’s dream.

At that time, Freud rowed against the tide, a time when everyone explained everything from rational thought, conscience, Freud emerges with psychoanalysis exploring a new field, the unconscious, where would be everything that conscience considered unbearable and preferred to deny, repress.

It’s easy to see that consciousness rejects some of our experiences, who never dreamed that they were in a place and could swear that they never saw or were in that place? Or dreamed of a person you swear you’ve never seen?

Well, our dreams are always full of strange things, people and places that we cannot remember, but that somehow were present in our lives, like on television or even on a trip, in this way we are led to admit that we knew something which was beyond the reach of our awareness.

In the book “The Future of an Illusion” there is a fragment of the letter that Sigmund Freud wrote to Oskar Pfister telling him that “By dealing with lay analysis, I intended to protect psychoanalysis from doctors, whereas in The Future of an Illusion, I try to defend her from the priests”.

For the understanding of dreams Freud proposes to his patients that they tell them all their dreams without manipulation, everything that comes to mind (free association), the vehicle for healing, for understanding would be speech.

However, it is neither a confession, like speaking to a priest, nor a medical consultation. Ana Freud at the age of 8 tells that she dreamed that she was eating strawberries that she was prevented from eating them during the day, Sigmund Freud proves that dreams are fulfillment of desires, that’s why psychoanalysis directs the cure and not the patient.

SO HERE’S THE TIP: is a dream the fulfillment of a wish? So baby sleep, dream and go “beyond the pleasure principle”.
