Who is Alexei in Stranger Things?
In Stranger Things, Alexei is a scientist from the USSR who we see since episode 1 of season 3, although you probably didn’t notice him.
In the chapter ‘Suzie, do you copy’, during a flashback to 1984, the Soviets assassinate Alexei’s boss after failing to open the portal to the Upside Down.
More out of obligation than pleasure, While Alexei, now Dr. Alexei, is in charge of the project and has only one year to deliver successful results.

The relationship between Alexei, Jim Hopper and Joyce
Hopper arrests Alexei because he suspects that he knows everything that is happening. The problem is that Alexei, or Smirnoff as Hopper calls him, only speaks Russian.
So Hopper decides to take him to Indiana with his friend Murray Bauman who also speaks that language to serve as a translator.

The friendship between Murray and Alexei in Stranger Things
Being the only person who speaks the same language, Alexei Smirnoff very quickly establishes an incredible friendship with Murray Bauman.
In the latest episodes of Stranger Things 3, we get to see While Alexei’s true personality and that he was probably just a victim of the circumstances around him.
In fact, at Hawkings’ Fourth of July parties Alexei reveals to Murray his desire to stay in the United States, watching Looney Tunes and drinking cherry slurpees.

The death of While Alexei in Stranger Things
During the celebration, Murray leaves Alexei alone to buy a couple of flags.
Those seconds are enough for the Soviet hitman Grigori to end his life with a shot to the chest.
His death scene is one of the saddest in the third season and we still can’t get over it.

Who is the actor who plays Alexei in Stranger Things?
The actor behind this endearing character seems to have been born for the role.
His name is Alec Utgoff and he was born in Ukraine in 1986…yes, just when Chernobyl happened and this country was still part of the USSR.

Alec studied acting in London and has played some supporting characters in films such as Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The San Andreas Fault and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation.
However, the role of While Alexei from Stranger Things seems to be his pass to fame because since then he has all the networks going crazy and dying of tenderness with his character.
