Do you know Snow White syndrome?

Until recently, Snow White syndrome was not fully accepted by the psychological field.. But today, surrounded as we are in a society where image and youth are overvalued as means to obtain professional and personal success, this type of image distortions appear to a greater degree.

We all know some cases, We are talking about people who, once they reach middle age, see themselves as if they were entering a process of decline.. They feel uncomfortable with the image that the mirror returns to them, associating their older years with a veil of absolute negativity.

More than a syndrome, we would be talking about a predepression process that must be taken into account from the clinical and social field.

This idea was coined by psychologist Betsy Cohen, who wrote a book developing the so-called Snow White syndrome. Because let’s remember… it actually applies to the evil stepmother and that sharp envy of the youth and beauty of the girl, whom she would later try to poison with an apple.

The mirage of youth and its exaggerated valuation

Youth is an apple that we bite eagerlysunset

Men and women with Snow White syndrome think so. And it’s more. These people develop a certain contempt for young peoplewhom they see as competitors, as enemies that undermine their self-esteem.

It would, therefore, be a disorder where patients become insecure about their own image when they reach an age that they already consider physical and personal decline. They fear old age and the years they have left to livethey are afraid of having to face them alone and they regret, above all, the years lost or wasted.

Until recently, this psychological condition was associated only with the female gender. but day by day We are seeing that it can be perfectly applied to both sexes, personalities who overvalue beauty as the answer to every act or behavior. As the only means with which to achieve any aspiration.

How a person who suffers from Snow White syndrome behaves

This fear of “wrinkles” sometimes causes people to want to undergo expensive cosmetic surgery.

That is, two types of behaviors can appear. One is the purest challenge or contempt for anyone younger than him/her whom he/she sees as a competitor. But also There are those who need to socialize with the younger generations.

Underneath this distorted conception of oneself is, above all, emotional immaturity. We must be clear that there is no age that classifies us as old. We create age in our minds, according to our emotional competencies.

Turning years is nothing more than learning from experiences, integrate knowledge in order to achieve a full life. And to do this we can choose between growing through an open mentality with which to nourish ourselves in our daily lives or, on the contrary, assuming our maturity from the side of negativity and immaturity.

People are not just a physical envelope endowed with beauty at a moment in our lives. Falling into that belief is what makes people who suffer from Snow White Syndrome lose the present.

Not appreciating the present, not assuming or accepting the image of oneself with optimism, fullness and integrity only brings us suffering.

Life is an attractive apple to bite with passion at any age and at any time. The poison is in our own minds and our insecurities.
