discover your goals

The site Inconsciente Coletivo is posting subtitled interviews on YouTube with the author of A Lei do Triunfo and Pensa e Enriqueça, perhaps the most successful self-help author in the world and who served as an inspiration to many others.

In the first interview, Napoleon Hill says that the number one key to finding success is knowing what success is. What is success for you? What are your goals? What is your definition of Purpose?

With that in mind, I decided to write about how we can make our goals clear; about how we can be sure and safely and practically understand what we want, and then see our future more deeply and brightly. After all, everything starts with a thought.

I use here the NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) tips summarized by Michael Hall, in his book The sourcebook of magic. According to Hall, there are 8 steps to form a clear objective:

1) Think of affirmative sentences

For example, let’s say someone whose biggest desire is to lose weight. Step one tells her to think, “I want to be thin.” But never think: I don’t want to be fat. In that last sentence, we have to think about being fat to think about not being fat. So, think about the positive, affirmative phrases. I want to be rich (never: I don’t want to be poor).

2) Think about what you can do

We do not control the behavior of others. Therefore, we cannot change them. We can change ourselves, transform our behavior. “I want others to like me”. This is not a goal. You will not be able to change others. What can you do? Be more friendly, pleasant, loving, generous? Step two states that you should focus on what you and only you can do.

3) Set the context

Establish the context of your objective. What locations, environments, situations will you have around your objective? In other words, what are the circumstances that will enable you to achieve your goals? If you want to study more, where are you going to study? In what context and at what times? What people are you likely to meet there?

4) Think using the five senses

What will you be able to see, feel, hear, smell, or pick up when you’ve reached your goal? How would you describe your goal using words linked to some of the five senses? For example, my goal is to earn more money. With the money, I will be able to see new landscapes in new cities, I will feel more peaceful and calm when the bills arrive, I will have more time to pick up the children from school, I will hear in my mind “I have money to pay this bill”… etc.

5) Think one step after another

If you want to write a book, how many pages do you want to write per day, per week, per month? Do you want to lose weight how many kilos per month? Break your goal down into smaller steps.

6) Think about the resources you need

To achieve your goals, what resources will you need? These resources can be financial, emotional, mental skills, among others. To write a book on Goals I need the following resources: computer, internet, two hours a day, a library with many books on the subject, etc.

7) Think ethically

In NLP, we say ecology. Do your goals fit with all your beliefs, opinions? Is there any side or part of you that disagrees with you reaching your goal? What you want can harm someone?

8- Think as if it were now

Having achieved your goal, what will be different than your current condition? Apart from all the above criteria, when you have achieved your goal, how will you know you have achieved it?

To really create your goal, think as if you’ve already achieved your goal.

In my office, I often receive requests from patients who want to lose weight. When we are working on the objectives and we arrive at this 8th Step – I tell them to think: “I am thin…I am thin” or “I am thin…I am thin”. Now!

9-Bring the future as if it were already now.

This step will also bring certainty if the questioned objective is the correct one for our life.

These 8 steps help us create goals that we can achieve and that will be ethical, that is, our whole being will agree so that we can act and achieve what we really want for our lives.
