It is very difficult to find someone who has never heard of Chaves and Chapolin Colorado. The two Mexican television series were and still are very successful in much of Latin America and were first broadcast in Brazil in 1984, by SBT. One of the unforgettable characters of Chaves was Dona Clotilde, a woman who was always trying to conquer Seu Madruga and was called by the children of the village of Bruxa do 71.

Today the awesome.club I would like to pay tribute to actress Angelines Fernández, the woman who gave life to such an important character in the village of Chaves and in the history of television.

Angelines Fernández, from Spain to Mexico

On July 9, 1924, María de los Ángeles Fernández Abad was born in Madrid, a woman who as a young woman fought for her ideals and even spent a year in Cuba. Still in 1947, the young woman migrated to Mexico, started to work and decided to stay. From then on, she became known as Angelines Fernández.

The start of a promising career

It was in Mexican lands that Angelines migrated to the world of the arts and began to work as an actress in theater and radio. She lived through the Golden Age of Mexican cinema and worked alongside artists such as Cantinflas and Arturo de Córdova in films such as El skeleton de la señora Morales (1959) and El Padrecito (1964).

How the character that so many people love was born

In 1971, thanks to actor Ramón Valdés, Angelines was invited to work on the show Chespirito (known in Brazil as Clube do Chaves). In the second period of the program, the independent series Chaves and Chapolin Colorado were created. In the first one, Angelines played a single, older woman in love with her neighbor, Seu Madruga. Although she insisted on being called Dona Clotilde, the village children always called her the Witch of 71, a name that stuck in the public’s mind.

His great friendship with Ramón Valdés

Ramón Valdés and Angelines Fernández met in 1971, when they played husband and wife in the film El profe. Some time later, the two began working on a comedy program alongside Roberto Bolaños, María Antonieta de las Nieves and Rubén Aguirre.

Although the creator of Chaves and Chapolin Colorado knew Angelines’ career very well, it was at the hands of Ramón Valdés that she began to form part of one of the most beloved villages in Brazil and Latin America.

Whenever the actress crossed paths with her friend Ramón in the corridors of the television station, she would ask the friend to talk to Bolaños so that she would be included in the cast. One day, her wish came true and she became Dona Clotilde, a character she played for 20 years.

What Dona Clotilde left us

In an interview, Paloma, Angelines’ daughter, said that whenever she went for a walk, the children would scream: “Look, it’s the Witch of 71!” Her mother would get angry and reply: “My name is Dona Clotilde!”
