Learn how to protect your pet
Brain tumor or metabolic and vascular disorders cause seizures but are not preventable. These problems can be avoided:
– Intoxication
Keep it away from toxic products and poisonous plants. And don’t give medicine without a doctor’s prescription.
– Infections
The main disease that causes convulsions, distemper can be prevented with annual vaccination of the animal.
– Run over
Avoid a tragedy by taking your dog for a walk on a leash. Animals are irrational beings and can run out of nowhere!
– Fleas and ticks
They transmit worms and bacteria that cause seizures. Combat with products indicated by the veterinarian.
Identify the symptoms
– Fainting, dilated pupils, loss of balance, “pedaling”, urinating, defecating, moaning loudly and salivating a lot are the most common signs.
– Sometimes only the muscles of the face contract, leaving the animal with a strange face.
– Before and after a convulsive attack, the animal may become agitated or very quiet, drink too much water or eat excessively.
– The crisis lasts from 1 to 3 minutes – in some cases, it only goes away with anticonvulsant medication.

What to do during the crisis
– Leave the dog or cat in a place without the risk of it falling, being attacked by another animal or dropping an object on itself.
– Protect his head by supporting it on towels.
– If he has recurrent seizures, prevent access to stairs.
– Seek immediate veterinary help if the crisis lasts more than 3 minutes.
– Never do that! Never put your hand, face or any object inside the animal’s mouth during the seizure. He can bite and hurt you or himself!
