Capricorn Constellation – Characteristics and more! – Map of My Heaven

The Capricorn Constellation is one of the Constellations of the Zodiac, and is well known to ancient people!

Despite being the most discreet of the zodiac group, it brings with it stories that date back to the Middle Ages and also has astrological relevance.

See how to locate the Capricorn Constellation and what are the interesting facts about it!

How to locate the Capricorn Constellation

The neighborhood of the constellation comprises the Constellation of Sagittarius, Microscope, Southern Fish, the Constellation of Aquarius and also the Constellation of the Foal and the Eagle.

In fact, this makes a lot of sense, since it was identified in our sky by the Babylonians as representing a mixture of fish and goat. So, being among aquatic and animal groups makes perfect sense.

Mainly because its stars are quite distant from us, and do not have such a significant apparent magnitude, it is quite difficult to find the cluster.

Probably one of the best ways to locate it is to follow the Eagle’s three brightest stars, heading south.

As it is not an easy task, even under ideal weather conditions, we recommend that you use astronomy apps as they will make your work much easier!

Capricorn Stars

Capricorn stars have a higher apparent magnitude, which means their brightness is not as intense to observers on Earth.

The brightest star is alpha Capricorni, a multiple system (with four stars) about a hundred light-years from our planet and which is also known by the Arabic name Algiedi (“goat”).

The second brightest is beta Capricorni, a yellow giant approximately 340 light years away. In this case, she receives the Arabic name Dabih, which refers to a character from ancient Arabic tales, whose story was lost over time.

Certainly, the most notable object to talk about is Messier M 30, a stellar cluster with a large concentration of stars. It can be observed with binoculars, appearing more diffuse, but it becomes incredible if observed through more powerful telescopes. It has magnitude 7.2 and is 40,000 light years away from us!

History of the Capricorn Constellation

There are some stories that talk about the star cluster, which, as we already mentioned, was recognized several centuries ago.

One of the oldest versions makes reference to the god Pan, who had a human body, two horns and goat legs. The stories say that he warned the Olympian gods of the threat of monsters and Titans against them.

At one point, he dives into a river, with the aim of metamorphosing into a fish, but paralyzed by fear, he looks like a mixture of this animal and that of a goat.

Therefore, as a tribute to the victory of the gods, they take him to the sky, forming the constellation.

On the other hand, another version, from Greek mythology, talks about the birth of Zeus. His mother (Rheia) would have taken him away from the brutality of his father (Cronos), preventing him from being devoured.

On an island, he is fed milk from a goat and accidentally breaks one of the animal’s horns. He later takes the goat to the heavens in tribute, creating the Capricorn Constellation.
