Virgo Constellation – Characteristics and curiosities – Map of My Heaven

The Virgo Constellation is one of the constellations of the Zodiac and was one of the first to be identified and catalogued. Its origin is quite ancient and there are several myths surrounding it!

It is the second largest constellation of the 88 catalogued, right after Hydra. Despite not having stars with a strong magnitude, it can be easily identified in the sky.

How to locate the Virgo Constellation

It is located close to the Constellation of Libra, the Constellation of the Cup, the Constellation of Leo, Berenice’s Hair and the Serpent.

You can find it in autumn in the southern hemisphere, when the Earth’s translational movement makes it possible for it to appear in our sky.

Its stars do not have such a high apparent magnitude, with only one of them being brighter. Even so, you can try the location based on the Constellation of Leo.

Stars of the Virgo Constellation

Without a doubt, the brightest star in this cluster is Spica (or Espiga), Alpha Virginis, a first magnitude star that has a luminosity 2,000 times greater than that of our Sun. It is 220 light years away from us.

In fact, its name refers to the ear of corn that the Virgin in the history of the constellation carries with her – we will talk more about this later – and appears as a representative of the constellation in the stars of the Brazilian flag.

Another noteworthy star is Porrima, Gamma Virginis, which is a double system with magnitude 3.7, therefore also easily identifiable.

Other objects in the constellation Virgo

There are around 13,000 galaxies between Virgo and Cabeleira de Berenice, most of which are closer to the constellation that is the focus of this article.

This region is called the Virgo Supercluster and some objects can be observed with telescopes with an aperture larger than 200mm.

Some of the most expressive are M49, a bright elliptical galaxy, and M87, one of the most expressive galaxies we can observe (magnitude 8.6).

At the same time, there is the Sombrero Galaxy, of magnitude 8 and which can be observed with a simple telescope or a 200mm telescope to identify the dark shape in the center, making it look like a Mexican hat.

Finally, there is also the quasar (active galactic nucleus, larger than a star, but smaller than a galaxy) 3C273 Virginis, which is an impressive three billion light-years away and is the object furthest away from an observation telescope. amateur (200mm) can locate!

History of the Virgo Constellation

Probably, the Virgo group is the one with the most stories talking about its origin. Because it is a very old constellation, over the centuries there has been much speculation about its history, but the main one refers to Astreia, virgin daughter of Zeus and Themis (goddess of justice and order).

The young woman wanders among men seeking to sow peace and righteousness. However, she realizes that humanity has no interest in such aspects and tired of so much conflict and war, she returns to the heavens – forming the stellar cluster.

In one hand she holds the scales and in the other, an ear of corn. That’s why in the past, when the Virgo Constellation appeared in the skies in the northern hemisphere, people saw it as a good sign for agriculture.

Virgo sign

Lastly, there is also the astrological influence that the constellation also has. Each area of the Ecliptic that the Sun hits during the year has been assigned the signs of the Zodiac: periods that mark unique characteristics for individuals born during the incidence.

Thus, Virgos are born between August 23rd and September 22nd (varying slightly, according to the solar position in the year in question). The Virgo sign is known for its strong systematization and for being very centered people!
